Chapter 1 - WHO DO YOU FEEL SAFEST WITH?

Judge Reyes folded her hands on the bench and looked directly at my sons.

The courtroom went so quiet I could hear Theo’s breathing from across the aisle.

Rowan and Theo were identical in the way twins can be identical to strangers and completely different to the people who love them. Same brown hair. Same gray blazers. Same nervous white-knuckled grip on the edge of the witness bench.

But Theo always showed fear first.

Rowan hid it until the last possible second.

“Who do you feel safest with?” Judge Reyes asked.

Before either child could answer, Adrian leaned forward so sharply his chair scraped against the wood floor.

“Tell her what we agreed on, Rowan.”

My whole body went cold.

Judge Reyes looked up instantly. “Mr. Hawthorne, do not coach your son.”

Adrian leaned back as if he had done nothing wrong. “I’m only helping him remember.”

That was the moment I knew he had already lost.

Not the case.

Not yet.

But the mask.

Because children do not freeze like that unless someone has taught them fear.

Theo lowered his eyes.

Rowan flinched, and for one terrible second I thought he was about to repeat the script Adrian had been drilling into them for weeks.

Then Rowan stood up.

His hand disappeared inside his blazer pocket.

Adrian’s face changed.

Rowan pulled out a small black USB drive.

“Your Honor…” he said, his voice shaking so badly it nearly broke me, “you need to see this.”

Adrian was on his feet before anyone else moved.

“He’s been manipulated! Take that away from him!”

Theo grabbed Rowan’s sleeve, crying now, but Rowan didn’t let go of the USB.

He looked straight at the judge.

“It’s from Dad’s hidden camera in our playroom.”

For the first time since our divorce started, Adrian looked afraid in a way he could not hide.
