Chapter 9 - THE PRICE OF CHEAPER

Helen’s consequences arrived slowly.

The police handled the mail issue.

The township handled waste violations.

The HOA handled rental violations.

The trash company handled billing corrections.

None of it was dramatic enough for Carl, who kept hoping for a courtroom confession.

Reality gave us forms.

Letters.

Hearings.

Invoices.

Helen was required to reimburse certain trash-related costs and remove unapproved rental arrangements.

Her HOA complaints against multiple neighbors were reviewed and many withdrawn.

A formal warning was placed in her homeowner file for repeated misuse of association reporting.

She hated that most.

Not the police.

Not the fines.

The file.

Helen cared deeply about being seen as respectable.

Paper had now contradicted her.

One afternoon, Linda from the HOA came to my house with revised records.

She apologized again.

Better this time.

“We should have required more evidence before issuing warnings.”

“Yes.”

“We relied too heavily on Helen.”

“Yes.”

“You’re not making this easy.”

“No.”

She actually laughed.

Then said:

“We’re updating the complaint process.”

Good.

That mattered more than punishing Helen.

A system that rewards the loudest liar will eventually find another one.

The trash company credited my overage charges.

The amount was smaller than my irritation.

Still, I accepted.

Carl suggested I frame the refund check.

Denise suggested I use it to buy a spotlight for the bins.

I bought neither.

I bought a new mailbox with a lock.

Practical revenge.

Helen stopped speaking to me.

That was also practical.

Sometimes I saw her at the end of her driveway, standing beside her own bins.

She no longer wore the green robe outside.

She no longer smiled at my trash pile.

She no longer inspected other people’s curbs like a self-appointed sanitation monarch.

The first week her restored service collected her own bags, Carl placed a single lawn chair in his driveway and watched.

I told him he was being ridiculous.

He said:

“History deserves witnesses.”

I could not argue with that.
