Chapter 8 - ROWAN'S SIGNATURE

Rowan stopped the tape again.
Isolde hated him for two seconds.
“Why?”
“Because we're calling your lawyer back before we hear more.”
“My lawyer is already listening.”
“Then child services records. Whatever Julian is talking about—”
“Do not manage me.”
The words hit harder than shouting.
Rowan stepped back.
Good.
She pressed play herself.
Julian said Marianne had been arrested the previous year after leaving baby Isolde alone in an apartment for forty minutes.
Isolde stared.
“No.”
Thomas:
She was at the pharmacy.
Julian:
With the baby alone.
Thomas:
She made a mistake.
Julian:
And the case was dismissed because you were home from work before the hearing and vouched for her. Do you think it will look the same after you're charged with lying in a fatal collision?
There.
Not:
We will legally take your child.
A threat to weaponize a real prior child-neglect incident against terrified parents.
Isolde covered her mouth.
She knew nothing about it.
Julian continued.
You can fight. You might even win. But you'll fight from Rikers while Marianne fights family court. Or you can let us keep your wife and daughter housed, insured and represented while Elliot negotiates the plea.
Thomas said:
You call that a choice?
Julian answered:
No. I call it the situation you helped create.
The tape ran another eight minutes.
No explicit bribe amount.
No direct order from Adrian.
But enough.
Thomas agreed not to change his statement that night.
Later, his formal plea came through independent counsel, Elliot Crane.
The Vales established a support trust for Marianne and Isolde.
Not secretly.
Disclosed to Thomas's lawyer.
But not to the Sloan family.
That omission could matter.
Then Thomas said one line that made Rowan sit forward.
If Rowan ever finds out, Adrian loses him.
Julian laughed softly.
Rowan is seven.
Thomas:
He won't always be.
The tape ended.
Nobody spoke.
Finally Isolde looked at Genevieve.
“You knew my father lied for your husband.”
“Yes.”
“You knew my family received money.”
“Yes.”
“You knew I married Rowan.”
“Yes.”
“And you still called me a gold digger.”
Genevieve's face tightened.
“I thought you knew.”
“You wanted me to.”
“Yes.”
There.
Genevieve had spent three years treating Isolde as a woman executing revenge because that version made Genevieve less afraid of facing what she already knew.
Isolde stood.
Rowan reached for her.
Then stopped himself.
She noticed.
“Thank you.”
Not forgiveness.
Just not grabbing.
Then she turned to him.
“There is something I need to know.”
“Anything.”
“Your background check.”
He had hoped to tell her after the tape.
That was exactly why he needed to tell her now.
“My mother pushed for one before we got engaged.”
Isolde stared.
“You investigated me.”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“Employment. finances. criminal records. litigation. family public records.”
Her face changed with each word.
“And you never told me.”
“No.”
“Did you see my father?”
“Yes.”
Genevieve watched.
Rowan wanted to blame her.
He didn't.
“I saw the conviction and a note that his prior employment had a sealed civil resolution.”
“Did you ask who employed him?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because counsel said it had no bearing on you, and I told myself asking would be invasive.”
Isolde almost smiled.
“You'd already run a background check.”
“Yes.”
The hypocrisy was obvious.
He continued.
“I didn't ask because I was afraid I'd find something that made my family pressure me harder.”
There.
His flaw.
Not ignorance.
Choice.
He wanted Isolde while also wanting to avoid whatever conflict would come from knowing too much.
So he let professionals look just far enough to reassure him.
He did not ask who Thomas worked for.
That omission had helped the old secret survive inside his own marriage.
Isolde looked away.
Then Malcolm entered.
“The Pike assignment is bigger than we thought.”
Rowan turned.
“How much bigger?”
“Vale Risk accessed Isolde's storage-company account three times.”
Isolde's face hardened.
“When?”
“First time seven months ago.”
Rowan stared.
Seven months.
Before Marianne's box was moved.
Before the baby shower.
Before Genevieve's anonymous warning.

Whoever was watching Isolde had been watching for longer than anyone admitted.
And Rowan's own standing security authorization had given them the door.
