Chapter 6 - The School Gate

Two weeks passed.
The forty-two thousand dollars had been legally recovered and frozen in a court escrow account under Lucia's supervision, allowing me to pay our mortgage and cover living expenses while my divorce proceedings progressed.
I had returned to my job as a high school science teacher. The school administration had been remarkably supportive, ensuring my schedule allowed me to drop off and pick up Sofía from her elementary school every day.
It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon at 3:15 PM.
I stood near the front gates of Oakridge Elementary, waiting among a crowd of mothers for the final school bell to ring.
Suddenly, a silver luxury sedan pulled up illegally along the yellow curb directly in front of the school entrance.
The passenger door flew open.
Teresa stepped out.
She was wearing a thick faux-fur coat and oversized sunglasses, her face set in a desperate, frantic expression. She began marching straight toward the kindergarten playground doors.
My heart instantly stopped.
"Teresa!" I shouted, sprinting across the lawn to block her path. "Stop right there!"
Teresa turned, her eyes burning behind her dark lenses as she saw me. "Get out of my way, Verónica! I have a right to see my granddaughter! You're turning her against her own blood!"
"There is an active Order of Protection against you!" I said, stepping directly between her and the school doors, pulling my phone from my pocket. "You are within two hundred feet of her school! That is a felony violation!"
"I don't care about your stupid court papers!" Teresa hissed, trying to shove past my shoulder. "Diego is miserable! He's living in a hotel because of you! Mateo misses his cousin, and you are acting like a malicious, vengeful bitch!"
Before she could lay a hand on me, two male school security officers ran down the front steps, having been alerted by the principal.
"Ma'am! Step back from the mother immediately!" the head security officer ordered, grabbing Teresa's arm.
"Let go of me! Do you know who I am?!" Teresa screamed, flailing her arms violently. "My son is a senior lawyer! I will have all of your jobs!"
"Call the police, Mark," the security officer told his partner. "We have a restraining order violation on school grounds."
Within five minutes, two city police cruisers pulled up with their lights flashing.
The parents on the sidewalk watched in absolute silence as the officers pulled Teresa's hands behind her fur coat, snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists.
"Verónica, tell them to stop!" Teresa wailed, her voice cracking with terror as she was pushed toward the back seat of the police car. "Diego will kill you for this! You hear me?! He will ruin you!"
I stood on the sidewalk, holding my head high, watching as the police door slammed shut on her.
At that exact moment, the school bell rang.
The double doors opened, and Sofía came running out carrying her backpack, a bright smile on her face as she saw me standing near the gate.
"Mommy!" she cheered, running into my arms.
I lifted her up, holding her tight against my chest, watching the police cruiser drive away into the distance.
"Hi, my sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "How was school today?"
May you like
"It was great!" Sofía beamed. "I drew a picture of our house with purple balloons."
"Let's go home and put it on the fridge," I smiled.
