Chapter 13 - SEVENTEEN SECONDS

Northstar suspended foreclosure the following morning. Its lawyers requested settlement discussions, but Anna instructed David not to negotiate money until the lien was formally released. The house was finally moving in the right direction, yet one unanswered question remained important enough to affect the criminal case.

Who put zolpidem in Anna’s tea?

Ryan denied it.

Margaret denied it.

Melissa only admitted that she had been told Anna would be asleep during the deed signing.

The answer came from the online notary company.

Before users entered an official notarization session, the platform automatically captured brief technical clips while testing the camera and microphone. The company initially considered those clips irrelevant because they were not part of the notarized record.

Investigators requested everything.

The first clip showed an empty chair.

The second showed Margaret adjusting the webcam.

The third showed Ryan entering the room.

The audio continued for seventeen seconds.

Margaret asked, “How long will she sleep?”

Ryan answered, “Long enough. I gave her half.”

Melissa said, “What if she wakes up?”

Ryan replied, “She won’t.”

Anna listened to the recording from her hospital room while Ethan slept in the NICU downstairs.

There was no dramatic rush of triumph.

Only confirmation.

Ryan had drugged her.

Later, his lawyer argued that the amount was small and Ryan never intended physical harm. The explanation damaged him more because it revealed the same reasoning behind every other decision: if the intended outcome was temporary and he believed the risk was manageable, consent became optional.

Melissa changed her legal strategy after hearing the recording. She surrendered her phone and began cooperating.

The messages filled the remaining gaps. Margaret wrote: We need one clean night to complete everything. Melissa responded: I’m not comfortable with this. Ryan replied: You aren’t doing anything to her. You’re signing paperwork.

Melissa answered: I have to pretend to be her on camera.

Ryan wrote: For thirty seconds.

Another conversation concerned the hospital bag. Ryan had packed it himself before the deed signing because he wanted to be prepared if Anna woke feeling ill. He put the old healthcare proxy and power of attorney inside so that, if she unexpectedly needed a hospital, he could establish authority quickly.

He had created a medical contingency for the risk created by secretly medicating his pregnant wife.

Doctors could not determine whether the zolpidem contributed to Anna’s contractions the following night. Preeclampsia was already developing, and there was no responsible way to assign causation.

Anna accepted that uncertainty.

The provable facts were enough.

Then Melissa gave investigators one final file from Ryan’s phone backup. Eight months earlier, during an argument about money and Margaret’s interference, Ryan had secretly recorded Anna saying, “If you ever use my money behind my back, I’ll leave.”

Ryan saved the recording under a single word:

TRIGGER.

Three days after making that recording, Ryan created the ANNA CAPACITY folder.

The timeline finally locked into place.

Anna’s statement had not triggered his fear that she was mentally unstable.

It triggered his decision to build a system that could keep her from leaving if she discovered what he was doing.

The plan had never started with Lake Ridge.

It started when Ryan heard his wife define a boundary and decided the safer response was not to respect it, but to prepare for the day he crossed it.
