Chapter 5 - THE STORY HE NEEDED ME TO TELL

At urgent care, the nurse cleaned the cut while I sat beneath fluorescent lights with dried frosting still tangled in my hair. The wound needed three small stitches. Blake arrived twenty minutes later without his mother.

He brought my clean coat and no apology.

“The doctor is going to ask what happened,” he said.

“I imagine that’s part of the job.”

“My mother lost control for one second.”

“She assaulted me.”

“You know how people twist family incidents.”

I studied him. “Which people?”

“Police. Lawyers. Your company. Anyone who hears a dramatic version.”

“The true version is dramatic enough.”

Blake sat beside me and lowered his voice. “Austin’s loan was supposed to fix everything. He would employ Jean. Mom’s mortgage would be covered. Mark’s debts would be consolidated.”

“And I would owe the bank if it failed.”

“It wasn’t going to fail.”

“That must be why my signature was already on the paperwork.”

He rubbed both hands over his face. “They filled things in to save time.”

“They copied my identification.”

“I gave Austin the file because we thought you had agreed in principle.”

“I had never heard the company’s name before tonight.”

Blake became quiet.

Then he made the mistake of saying what he actually feared.

“If you report this, everyone loses everything.”

Not you were hurt.

Not I am sorry.

Not my mother should never have touched you.

Everyone loses everything.

I finally understood that Blake did not see himself as someone caught betraying his wife. He saw himself as the responsible son attempting to protect an extended family from a selfish obstacle.

“What do you want me to tell the doctor?” I asked.

His shoulders loosened, believing I had surrendered.

“Say the plate slipped when Mom turned around. We’ll cancel the application and talk privately.”

I nodded as though considering it.

Then the nurse entered with an incident form.

I wrote exactly what happened.

Blake watched every word.

When I finished, I asked the nurse to call security and told my husband to leave.

He stood slowly.

“You’re choosing strangers over my family.”

“No,” I said. “I’m finally choosing myself over yours.”
