Chapter 5 - THE FOURTH SILENCE

The fourth incident began because Erin came to the house.
I had managed to send her only one unfinished message from my work laptop:
Mark lied about his job. If I stop replying—
Diane entered before I could finish.
She closed the laptop and told me Mark had decided I needed a break from work. That afternoon, my employer received an email from my account claiming I was taking emergency medical leave because of severe anxiety.
I had not written it.
Erin arrived just after sunset and rang the bell for nearly ten minutes. I could hear her calling my name from the porch.
Mark kept me inside the upstairs bedroom.
“Tell her you’re sick and want space.”
I refused.
Diane stood beside him holding the black thread.
That was when I finally understood the arrangement. Diane was not acting whenever Mark happened to be absent. He created the circumstances, removed my access to help, and let his mother perform the violence he wanted to deny.
I tried to shout for Erin.
Diane said, “No more noise from this useless mouth.”
The next clear memory I have is the hospital light.

Mark later claimed he found me unconscious after a panic attack and rushed me to the emergency room. But the infection told Dr. Carter that some injuries were older. The matching scar tissue showed a pattern. My torn blouse, bruised arms, and the thread remaining in place told a story no panic attack could explain.
They had tried to silence me so often that my body had begun keeping the record for me.
