Chapter 9 - The Legal Fortress

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had completely cleared from the Pacific Northwest, leaving the sky over Tacoma crisp, cold, and brilliant blue.
Inside the high-security visitor wing of the Northwest Regional Federal Detention Center, Genevieve Sterling sat behind a thick sheet of bulletproof plexiglass.
She was wearing an oversized orange jump suit. Her hair was unwashed, pulled back into a messy rubber band, and her manicured nails were chipped and raw.
On the other side of the glass sat Arthur Vance and a middle-aged woman in a sharp dark suit—Elizabeth Warren, the senior managing partner of Seattle’s most ruthless corporate defense firm.
“You have to get me out of here, Elizabeth!” Genevieve rasped through the intercom phone, her hand shaking violently against the glass. “The food is inedible! The guards are vulgar, common people! I haven't slept in two days!”
Elizabeth Warren adjusted her glasses, reviewing a thick stack of court filings on her iPad. She didn't look sympathetic.
“Mrs. Sterling,” Elizabeth said, her voice dry and clinical. “I accepted this consultation as a courtesy to Arthur. But I need to be entirely transparent with you about your situation.”
“My situation is a temporary administrative error!” Genevieve snapped. “My son has staged a ridiculous coup using his minor position in the federal government! He has no authority—”
“Your son is Special Director Julian Sterling,” Elizabeth interrupted firmly. “He spent six years working under a specialized Presidential appointment with the Department of Justice. The evidence he submitted to the federal grand jury yesterday morning includes four hundred hours of decrypted audio recordings, twelve thousand pages of wire-transfer logs, and four-K security footage of you pushing his wife down a stairwell.”
Genevieve’s chest heaved. “The video… the video can be challenged! I can claim I was trying to save her! I can claim she lost her footing!”
“The toxicological report from the state forensics lab was filed two hours ago,” Elizabeth continued, pitilessly reading from her screen. “They found trace amounts of Zolpidem—a heavy prescription sedative—in Sophia Sterling’s bloodstream. The source was traced directly to a custom tea blend recovered from your private pantry on Mercer Island.”
Genevieve slumped back in her steel chair, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
“What about the board?” Genevieve whispered, looking at Arthur Vance. “Arthur… the board will back me. We have six voting seats—”
Arthur looked at her through the glass, his face hollow and old.
“The board is gone, Genevieve,” Arthur said softly. “The federal government seized ninety-two percent of the hospital’s operational shares yesterday under the RICO forfeiture act. The executive committee was dissolved. Dr. Aris Thorne has been appointed interim Chief Executive Officer by the federal trustee.”
“And my trust?” Genevieve gasped, her fingers clawing at the glass. “My Mercer Island estate? My accounts in Zurich?”
“Frozen,” Elizabeth Warren said, closing her iPad with a quiet click. “All assets tied to the Sterling Family Revocable Trust have been placed under a federal preservation hold. You currently have access to zero dollars.”
Genevieve stared at them, her eyes wide, wild, and utterly empty.
“He took everything,” she whispered. “My own son… took everything.”
“He didn't just take your money, Mrs. Sterling,” Elizabeth said, standing up and pulling on her gloves. “The United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington has officially filed charges seeking life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. There will be no bail bargain. There will be no plea deal. You are going to trial, and you are going to lose.”
Elizabeth turned and walked out of the visitor room, her heels clicking against the cold floor.

Arthur Vance stood up slowly, looking at Genevieve through the glass one last time.
“You should have let him marry the librarian, Genevieve,” Arthur said quietly. “He was the only person in this family who actually knew how to survive.”
