Chapter 12 - JASON'S UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH

Jason's estate lawyer found an audio note.

Not hidden.

Not secret.

Stored with draft estate-planning files Marissa had never requested.

Recorded six weeks before his death.

Jason sounded annoyed.

Alive.

That hurt.

Note for Kaplan meeting. Mom cannot stay trustee. Marissa also cannot pretend ‘I hate paperwork’ is a financial plan. Use professional fiduciary.

Marissa laughed despite herself.

Then cried.

Paige sat beside her.

“Want me to turn it off?”

“No.”

Jason continued.

House question: I still think sell. Marissa thinks adapt. Both can work. If I'm dead, nobody gets to use my opinion as a vote I don't have anymore.

Marissa went still.

He knew them all too well.

Then:

Mom paid for more than Marissa realizes. Make sure she gets reimbursed fairly. But no open-ended ‘caregiving’ claims. She'll turn love into an invoice if nobody makes her define it.

Paige whispered:

“Damn.”

Marissa almost smiled.

Then Jason said:

Marissa has been letting Mom handle too much because it means she doesn't have to fight with her. That's not sustainable either.

There.

No posthumous sainthood for Marissa.

She had chosen avoidance repeatedly.

Jason knew.

The recording also clarified the accessible bathroom at Beverly's home.

Jason had approved it.

He intended the trust to reimburse half.

Not all.

Independent accounting adjusted accordingly.

Beverly owed approximately $5,100 back.

Not sixteen thousand.

The financial misconduct became smaller.

The coercion became clearer.

Beverly had not emptied the trust.

She had not secretly enriched herself by hundreds of thousands.

She had taken legitimate authority and used it as emotional leverage.

That was less cinematic than theft.

More recognizable.

Then the attorney found an email from Jason to Beverly.

If Marissa won't move, stop pushing for six months. She is allowed to choose something I think is wrong.

Beverly had replied:

She is allowed to choose for herself. She is not allowed to choose instability for the children.

Jason:

That sentence is exactly why you cannot be trustee long term.

Marissa sat back.

There was the entire family conflict in three lines.

Beverly thought care justified overriding people.

Jason understood the danger.

Marissa avoided confronting it because confronting Beverly was exhausting.

Then death froze an unfinished arrangement into place.

Until the day Beverly hit the children.

The violence did not create the financial problem.

It exposed it.
