Chapter 4 - The Phone Noah Found

Noah found the phone before I did.

The morning after Daniel died, our house filled with people who behaved as though grief gave them permission to open drawers.

Vivian arrived before breakfast with a garment bag, a casserole, and instructions.

Grant followed with a box of Daniel’s office files he claimed needed to be “secured for business reasons.”

I was too numb to fight at first.

That was what they counted on.

Vivian wanted Daniel’s watch.

Grant wanted his laptop.

Vivian wanted Noah to stay at her house “where things felt stable.”

Grant wanted access to Daniel’s home office.

I said no to the office.

That was the first battle.

Grant’s jaw tightened.

“Elena, this involves family assets.”

“This is my home.”

Vivian looked at me like I had spit on the floor.

“Daniel’s home.”

“My husband’s home,” I said. “My son’s home. Mine too.”

Noah stood on the stairs in pajamas, clutching the stuffed soccer ball Daniel had given him when he was five.

He watched everything.

Children always watch more than adults admit.

That afternoon, while Vivian argued with the funeral director over flowers and Grant stepped outside to take a call, Noah went into Daniel’s office and found the envelope.

For Noah only if I’m not here.

He brought it to me with shaking hands.

“Mom,” he whispered, “Dad wrote my name.”

Inside was Daniel’s phone.

Not his regular phone.

A second one.

Small. Black. Plain.

Taped to the back was a sticky note in Daniel’s handwriting.

Elena, I’m sorry. I couldn’t risk putting this on my main phone. If you’re reading this, use Marcus Reed. Do not let Mom or Grant handle anything.

My knees weakened.

Noah stood beside me, eyes wide.

“Is Dad in trouble?”

I pulled him into my arms.

“No, baby.”

That was a lie.

Daniel was beyond trouble.

We were the ones still inside it.

There were three recordings on the phone.

I listened to the first after Noah fell asleep, alone in Daniel’s office with the door locked.

Daniel’s voice was low.

“If anything happens to me, check what they did to Elena.”

The second recording was longer.

It contained Grant’s voice.

May you like

And Vivian’s.

And after three minutes, I understood why Daniel had been afraid.
