Chapter 15 - The Legacy of Claire

Late that evening, after our guests had departed and the house fell into a serene, cozy quiet, a gentle autumn rain began to patter against the high glass windows of our oceanfront living room.

A warm fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting long, golden shadows across the plush rug.

I lay tucked into Julian’s side on the massive charcoal sofa, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, resting my head against his broad chest, listening to the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart.

Julian was slowly twirling my wedding ring around my finger, his eyes staring peacefully into the dancing flames of the fireplace.

"What are you thinking about, darling?" Julian asked softly, resting his chin on the top of my head.

I looked down at my hands—no longer red, raw, or chapped from grease and cold water, but strong, elegant, and protected by the most powerful man in the city.

"I was thinking about five years ago," I admitted quietly. "About standing at that window in Greenwich, scrubbing that copper roasting pan in the dark, telling myself to just get through the night."

Julian wrapped both of his arms around me tighter, pulling me flush against his chest as if he could erase the memories of my past through sheer force of love.

"And now?" Julian asked softly.

"And now," I smiled, looking up into his dark, magnificent eyes filled with endless devotion, "I realize that the storm didn't come to break me. It came to wash away the people who didn't deserve to see me shine."

Julian smiled—that rare, breathtaking smile reserved only for me—and leaned down to kiss my forehead.

"You shine brighter than the entire city, Claire Mercer," Julian whispered into the quiet dark.

Outside, the November rain fell softly against the glass, but inside our home, there was only warmth, peace, and a love that would burn brightly forever.
