Chapter 6 - PATRICIA’S VERSION

Patricia came to our house three days later.

I saw her through the doorbell camera.

Pearl earrings.

Cream cardigan.

A gift bag in her hand.

I did not open the door.

She rang twice.

Then called Evan.

He answered from beside me.

“Mom.”

“I’m outside.”

“I know.”

“Let me see Lily.”

“No.”

The silence on the line was almost physical.

“I am her grandmother.”

“And you told Claire not to call 911.”

“I was trying to prevent panic.”

“You were trying to prevent embarrassment.”

Patricia’s voice sharpened.

“Do not speak to me like that.”

Evan closed his eyes.

That tone had raised him.

Trained him.

Made him smaller before he had language for it.

Then he opened his eyes again.

“No.”

Just that.

No.

Patricia’s face changed on the camera feed.

“You are letting Claire poison you.”

“Lily has a concussion.”

“It was an accident.”

“Then why did you lie?”

“I didn’t lie.”

“You said she probably fell.”

“She did fall.”

“You left out why.”

Patricia looked toward the street as if a neighbor might be watching.

Even then.

Even outside our house.

Performance mattered.

Evan said, “Leave the gift on the porch if you want. You are not coming inside.”

“That’s cruel.”

“No. Cruel was watching my daughter unconscious and worrying about a birthday party.”

Patricia began crying.

I felt nothing.

That frightened me a little.

I had spent years craving a real relationship with her.

Approval.

Warmth.

Some proof that she saw me as more than the woman who married her son.

Now I watched her cry on my porch and understood how often tears had been used as doors.

Not this time.

She left the gift bag.

Inside was a stuffed bear and a card that said they hoped Lily “felt better after her little scare.”

Little scare.

Evan read it once.

Then placed it in the evidence folder.

That small act mattered.

Not throwing it away in anger.

Not sending a response.

Documenting.

Patricia’s version of events needed Lily’s injury to become small.

So we kept every attempt she made to shrink it.
