Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT I FOUND THE WRONG EMAIL

The first real crack came from an email that was not meant for me.

Grant and I shared a home office, though by then he rarely worked there.

One Thursday evening, his tablet began chiming repeatedly while he showered.

I picked it up intending to silence it.

An email preview appeared.

Scott: She still hasn’t signed. Friday deadline is getting tight.

I stared at the screen.

I knew I should have put it down.

I opened it.

The thread contained references to a transaction called Orion.

I recognized the name from a board packet Grant had summarized for me weeks earlier.

He said Vale Meridian was considering acquiring a regional service operator.

The emails told a different story.

Orion was not simply an acquisition.

The structure would move valuable aviation service contracts into a new subsidiary partly controlled by a company connected to Scott.

There were also references to guarantees.

My authorization.

My trust vote.

And one sentence from Grant that I read four times.

Claire doesn’t need the mechanics. She just needs to sign before counsel complicates it.

The shower turned off upstairs.

I photographed the screen.

Then another page.

Then another.

By the time Grant came downstairs, the tablet was back where he left it.

I sat on the sofa pretending to read.

He kissed the top of my head.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

I hated how easily the lie came.

The next morning, I called Evelyn.

She answered on the first ring.

“I need to see you.”

She did not ask why.

We met in her office.

I showed her the photographs.

For twenty minutes, she said almost nothing.

Then she looked at me.

“Did you sign anything related to Orion?”

“No.”

“Did you authorize Grant to use your trust vote?”

“No.”

“Has he asked?”

“Not directly.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“What?”

“He may not be planning to ask directly.”

My stomach turned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means we verify before we accuse.”

For the next ten days, I lived inside my marriage pretending I knew nothing.

Grant slept beside me.

Made coffee.

Discussed vacations.

Asked whether we should spend Thanksgiving with Margaret.

Meanwhile, Evelyn and two outside accountants examined everything she could legally access.

What they found was bad.

What happened afterward was worse.

Because Grant discovered I was looking.
