Chapter 4 - WHAT MAYA HADN’T TOLD ME

While the team prepared Maya for urgent treatment, Dr. Carter asked Robert to leave so she could speak privately with her patient.

He protested.

Hospital staff removed the choice from him.

When the door closed, Maya began shaking.

I thought she was afraid of what came next.

I was wrong.

“There’s something I didn’t tell you.”

My stomach dropped.

“What?”

She looked toward the closed door.

“Dad knew it was getting worse.”

I sat beside her.

“What do you mean?”

“Last week.”

Robert had driven Maya home from school after another episode.

She had begged him to take her to urgent care.

He refused.

“He said you’d panic and spend money we didn’t have.”

I felt sick.

“Maya, why didn’t you tell me?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because you guys fight every time I need something.”

That sentence hurt more than anything Robert had said that morning.

My daughter had begun measuring her pain against the amount of conflict it might cause.

She continued.

Two nights earlier, she had woken Robert because the pain was severe.

I had been working late at the accounting firm.

Robert gave her an over-the-counter pain reliever and told her to go back to bed.

When she asked whether he could call me, he told her no.

“He said if I kept doing this, you’d take me to the ER and we’d lose our deductible.”

I covered my mouth.

Dr. Carter stayed silent.

There was no judgment in her expression.

That somehow made it worse.

“Maya…”

“I thought maybe he was right.”

“No.”

“I thought maybe I was just weak.”

“No.”

This time my voice broke.

I took her face gently between my hands.

“You never have to prove pain to deserve help.”

She started crying.

So did I.

Then she said the sentence that changed my anger into something colder.

“Dad took my phone.”

“When?”

“That night. Until morning. So I wouldn’t call you.”

I looked toward the door.

Robert had not merely disagreed with me.

He had prevented our sick child from contacting me because he was afraid I would seek medical care.

Dr. Carter asked Maya several more questions.

Then she documented the conversation.

Every word.

Robert had spent a month calling Maya dramatic.

Now there would be a record.

And this time, he would not control what it said.
