Chapter 4 - Genevieve Needed A Family That Looked Unbroken

Genevieve’s cruelty made more sense when I learned what she feared.

Her mother had been abandoned publicly.

Not quietly divorced.

Replaced.

Genevieve was sixteen when her father brought his mistress to a company Christmas party.

Everyone knew.

Nobody acknowledged it.

Three months later, he moved out.

Genevieve spent decades telling herself the humiliation came from her mother “letting people see weakness.”

That was the wrong lesson.

But it became hers.

She built a life around appearances.

Never cry in public.

Never admit financial trouble.

Never let people speculate.

When Adrian and I began separating emotionally, Genevieve’s first concern was not whether we could repair.

It was:

“What are people going to think?”

Then Bianca appeared.

Bianca fit the family image better.

Same clubs.

Same schools.

Same social network.

No awkward Mercer ownership structure nobody understood.

Genevieve convinced herself Bianca could make the transition elegant.

That word again.

Transition.

Not affair.

She wanted to control the narrative before the marriage was legally over.

At the gala, she assigned Bianca my seat deliberately.

Later she admitted why.

“I thought if everyone saw it once, the speculation would stop.”

I asked:

“Speculation about what?”

“About whether Adrian had chosen.”

There it was.

She needed a public choice.

I was the inconvenient woman still holding a wedding ring.

Bianca was the future she wanted everyone to accept.

The shove shocked Genevieve.

Not because Bianca touched me.

Because it disrupted the elegance.

Physical violence makes social euphemisms harder.

A chair can be reassigned politely.

A wife can be told to leave quietly.

A woman on the floor forces people to admit something happened.

Genevieve hated that.

So did I.

That was one reason I had tolerated too much.

I wanted dignity.

I thought dignity meant never forcing the room to look.

Eventually I learned silence does not prevent humiliation.

Sometimes it simply lets other people script it.
