Chapter 4 - Why Raymond Called Me

Raymond Bell was seventy-one and allergic to surprises.
That probably saved me.
The proposed settlement required his office to handle part of the Cole Meridian share transfer.
He reviewed the documents the morning before the wedding.
Something bothered him.
Not the signature at first.
A paragraph.
The settlement described my shares as though Adrian had originally transferred them to me during the marriage.
He had not.
I had acquired them through direct investment and early equity grants.
Raymond knew because he drafted the paperwork.
He called Adrian’s divorce lawyer.
They said:
“Vivian signed.”
Raymond asked whether Maya Chen had approved.
They believed Vivian had waived separate representation on that portion.
That made even less sense.
Raymond called Maya.
She was stunned.
Then Raymond called me.
I was sitting on my couch with an ice machine wrapped around my shoulder.
“Vivian, did you sign a marital settlement yesterday?”
“No.”
Silence.
“Did you authorize anybody to sign for you?”
“No.”
More silence.
Then:
“I need you to say that again.”
I did.
Within hours, lawyers were moving.
Nobody declared fraud instantly.
The allegedly signed documents had to be examined.
The court was notified that consent was disputed.
An emergency request stopped the uncontested process before final entry.
The wedding was the following afternoon.
I could have stayed home.
My lawyer advised me to.
So did Raymond.
I almost did.
Then I learned press had been told Adrian and Celeste were legally free to marry.
That mattered.
Not because I needed public revenge.
Because I suddenly understood how far the false story had traveled.
If I stayed home again, Adrian would marry publicly.
Then later everyone would call whatever happened in court a technicality caused by the bitter ex-wife.
I had spent years assuming facts eventually defended themselves.
They don’t.
People defend facts.
So I put on the easiest dress I could manage over my sling.
Took the original notice package.
Then a second certified copy in my bag because Maya said:
“Never bring only one copy into a room full of people who want it gone.”
I loved her for that.
Adrian threw the first onto the floor.
He could not throw away the second.
And when that page landed near Celeste, she recognized something Adrian did not.
Raymond’s declaration included how the disputed documents had reached counsel.
Through an account controlled by Celeste’s office.
That alone did not prove she forged anything.
But it explained why Raymond called me before Adrian.
May you like
He no longer trusted the chain carrying information to Adrian.
Neither did I.
