Chapter 4 - The Corporate Shield

At 8:30 AM the following morning, while I was still resting in the hospital room under police guard, Julian Sterling walked into the corporate headquarters of Sterling-Vance Logistics in downtown Chicago.

The headquarters occupied the top three floors of a glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooking the Chicago River.

Julian wore a fresh navy suit, a silk tie, and dark designer sunglasses to hide the dark circles beneath his eyes. He walked through the glass doors of the executive suite, holding a leather portfolio, attempting to maintain his usual aura of untouchable corporate power.

He walked past the reception desk, heading straight for his corner office.

"Mr. Sterling," the receptionist called out nervously, her voice trembling slightly. "Mr. Vance is waiting for you in the boardroom."

Julian paused, his brow furrowing beneath his glasses. "Which Vance? Marcus?"

"No, sir," she whispered, looking down at her desk. "Arthur Vance."

Julian scoffed, adjusting his cuffs. He assumed Arthur had come to plead with him, to negotiate a quiet family settlement, or to beg him not to cut Evelyn off financially.

Julian turned on his heel and strode down the carpeted hallway toward the primary boardroom. He pushed open the heavy frosted glass doors with practiced authority.

"Arthur," Julian said smoothly, stepping into the room and pulling off his sunglasses. "I understand you're upset about last night's misunderstanding. But bringing the police into a private marital dispute was an absurd overreaction that could damage this firm's public reputation—"

Julian stopped speaking.

Sitting at the twenty-foot polished mahogany conference table was not just Arthur Vance.

Sitting beside my father was Marcus Vance—the Chief Executive Officer and founder of Sterling-Vance Logistics, and Arthur's elder brother.

Across the table sat three senior forensic accountants from the state auditor's office, alongside two uniformed detectives from the Cook County Financial Crimes Division.

Julian's hand froze on his necktie. "What... what is this?"

Arthur sat at the head of the table, his heavy hands resting flat on the mahogany surface. He didn't look angry; he looked like a judge preparing to read a sentence.

"Sit down, Julian," Marcus Vance said, his deep, gravelly voice cutting through the room like a cold knife.

Julian swallowed hard, taking a slow step toward the table. "Marcus, if this is about Evelyn’s false allegations from last night—"

"This isn't about Evelyn, Julian," Marcus interrupted flatly. "Though if it were up to me personally, I'd throw you off this balcony myself for what you did to my niece."

Marcus slid a thick blue binder across the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Julian’s hands.

"That," Marcus said, "is a forensic audit report covering the last three fiscal years of your corporate expense accounts, your offshore subsidiary routing logs, and your private discretionary accounts."

Julian’s face drained of every ounce of color.

"You thought because you married into the family, no one was checking your underlying ledgers," Arthur said softly from the head of the table. "You thought because you were the bright young Senior Vice President of Strategy, we didn't notice thirty-two unverified wire transfers totaling $1.4 million moved out of our Great Lakes vessel maintenance reserve account."

"That's... that's a misinterpretation of strategic capital allocation!" Julian stammered, his polished voice cracking completely. "I used those funds for private vendor acquisition negotiations—"

"You used those funds to pay off your personal gambling debts at casinos in Milwaukee and high-stakes private poker games in River North," one of the financial crime detectives interrupted, pulling a warrant from his folder. "And you used corporate credit cards to fund the secret apartment you rented in Gold Coast."

Julian stumbled back a step, hitting the edge of the glass wall behind him.

"Your corporate access keycards were revoked ten minutes ago, Julian," Marcus said coldly. "Your stock options are frozen under a court injunction. Your company vehicle has been repossessed from the basement parking garage. And as of eight o'clock this morning, you are officially terminated from Sterling-Vance Logistics for gross felony embezzlement."

The two detectives stood up from their chairs, pulling out a fresh pair of handcuffs.

"Julian Sterling," the lead detective stated, "you are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and felony wire fraud. You have the right to remain silent..."

May you like

As the steel cuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists for the second time in twelve hours, Arthur stood up from the table. He walked over, stood inches away from Julian's face, and looked down into his terrified eyes.

"You told my daughter last night that she wouldn't get a dime out of your accounts," Arthur whispered softly. "You were right, Julian. Because by the time the state of Illinois is finished with you, you won't have a single dime left for yourself."
