Chapter 7 - The Paper Fortress

While Daniel sat in a holding cell at the precinct waiting for his arraignment, I initiated phase three of my plan.

By 6:00 PM, a team of six movers accompanied by my private security detail arrived at the Beacon Hill mansion.

We systematically packed every single piece of furniture, artwork, and personal belonging that had belonged to my family prior to my marriage, loading them into three massive Hawthorne Logistics transport trucks parked in the driveway.

At the same time, my family law attorney, Eleanor Vance, was in her office filing an emergency petition for divorce, an immediate freeze on all joint financial accounts, and a temporary restraining order barring Daniel, Marcus, Sophia, and Evelyn from entering any property owned by Hawthorne Logistics or the Hawthorne Estate Trust.

Marcus and Sophia arrived at the mansion at 7:30 PM, intending to collect Daniel’s personal belongings, only to find the front gate locked with heavy iron chains and two armed private security guards standing at the entrance.

“Let us in!” Marcus yelled through the iron bars, slamming his fists against the metal. “This is my brother’s house! You have no right to lock us out!”

I walked slowly down the gravel driveway, stopping a few feet behind the iron gate, wearing a black trench coat against the evening mist.

“This house was bought by my father in 1998, Marcus,” I said coldly. “The deed is in my name alone. Daniel’s name was never added to the title, despite what he lied to you and your mother about for six years.”

“You ruined his life!” Sophia shrieked, clutching the iron bars. “He’s sitting in a jail cell right now because of you! You’re a cold, heartless monster!”

“Your brother tried to poison me so he could steal my father’s company,” I replied, looking at her with absolute indifference. “He used your mother as an pawn, he used Marcus as a financial front for illegal wire transfers, and he exposed all of you to federal felony charges. If anyone ruined your lives, Sophia, it was Daniel.”

I turned my back on them, walking toward the grand front doors of the mansion as Marcus screamed curses behind me.

“Check your mail tomorrow, Marcus,” I called back over my shoulder. “The FBI’s Financial Crimes Task Force will be serving you with a subpoena for your role in Vanguard Maritime.”

The screaming stopped instantly.
