Chapter 6 - VANESSA’S SECOND ACCOUNT
Vanessa attempted to distance herself from Ethan before noon.
She emailed the board claiming she had been trapped in an inappropriate relationship with a powerful chief executive and knew nothing about false documents.
The records told another story.
She had created a private communications folder titled Transition.
Inside were proposed press statements announcing that I had taken indefinite medical leave. One described Ethan as the “sole visionary founder” of Bennett Meridian.
Another accused me of interfering with projects during a period of psychiatric decline.
Vanessa had also approved payments from project-marketing budgets to an outside consultancy.
The consultancy belonged to her brother.
More than $420,000 had moved through it over fourteen months.
Some funded legitimate advertising.
The rest paid for travel, designer purchases, hotel suites and the rental of a private apartment Ethan used with her.
The most revealing file was a draft announcement for their future engagement.
It was dated two months before Ethan attacked me.
They did not merely expect me to leave the marriage.
They expected me to leave the company, house and Bennett name behind while they inherited the life built from my capital and credentials.
Vanessa called me that afternoon.
“Claire, I never wanted anyone hurt.”
“You stood behind him while he hit me.”
“I froze.”
“You told him I always crawled back.”
She began crying.
“I was angry.”
“So was he.”
