Chapter 3 - HOW A TEN-YEAR-OLD FOUND A SECRET PHONE

I did not praise Tommy for investigating his father.

I want that understood.

He was a child.

He should have been worrying about math homework and whether he could stay up until ten.

Instead, Joe’s carelessness pulled him into adult secrets.

The second phone appeared six weeks before the gala.

Tommy was looking for batteries in the cabinet beneath Joe’s home-office desk.

He found a phone inside a zippered electronics case.

Black.

No family photos.

No normal apps on the home screen.

Tommy assumed it was an old work phone.

He brought it to Joe.

“Dad, is this yours?”

Joe snatched it away.

Then became unusually angry.

“Never go through my things.”

Tommy apologized.

That should have ended it.

A week later, he found the phone again.

This time it was charging beside the basement printer.

The screen lit up when a message arrived.

Tommy did not understand most of what he saw.

He understood my name.

The preview said:

Natalie signs on the 14th. After that we’re clear.

The fourteenth was my birthday.

Tommy told me later that he stood there for almost a minute trying to decide whether he should tell me.

Then Joe came downstairs.

Tommy hid behind the storage-room door because he knew he would get in trouble for being near the phone again.

Joe answered a call.

Tommy heard him say:

“She still thinks the gala is about her birthday.”

Then:

“No. The second phone stays offline.”

That scared him.

Two days later, Tommy told his seventeen-year-old cousin Ethan what he had heard.

Ethan did the first responsible thing in the entire chain.

He told Tommy not to touch the phone again.

Then he told him that if he ever saw something that made him afraid, he should tell me.

Tommy tried.

Twice.

But both times Joe was nearby.

The third time, I was leaving for a board dinner and told him we could talk the next morning.

I still hated myself for that.

The next morning, school happened.

Then life.

Then Tommy apparently decided grown-ups were moving too slowly.

The USB had not come from the phone itself.

Joe kept it inside the same electronics case.

One afternoon, Tommy found the case open on Joe’s desk while looking for a charger Joe had borrowed from him.

The USB was labeled only with a strip of black tape.

Tommy took it.

He did not open it.

He put it in the pocket of his school backpack because he thought it was evidence that the second phone existed.

That was all.

The night of the gala, he brought it because he planned to give it to me after the party.

Instead, Joe humiliated me onstage.

And Tommy decided he was done waiting for adults to behave like adults.
