Chapter 9 - The Daughter Who Was Born After The Cameras Left

My daughter was born six weeks after the courthouse.
Her name is Evelyn.
My mother’s middle name.
Labor was ordinary.
Painful.
Long.
No emergency connected to the fall.
No dramatic final consequence tied neatly to Vanessa’s shove.
I was grateful.
Richard was allowed limited contact during the first months through temporary court arrangements.
Some people thought I should block him completely.
He was still Evelyn’s father.
His conduct toward me mattered.
His future relationship with her required separate evaluation.
Those facts could coexist.
I wanted to make him pay emotionally by controlling access.
I am not proud of that.
I did not.
Our lawyers and the family court created a structured plan.
Supervised initially.
Then expanded as appropriate.
No Vanessa present.
No litigation discussions around the baby.
Richard became a surprisingly patient father.
That complicated my feelings.
People prefer moral symmetry.
Bad husband.
Bad father.
Good wife.
Good mother.
Life refused.
Richard had harmed me.
He had also sat for forty minutes trying to get Evelyn to burp while whispering nonsense about Treasury yields.
Both were true.
I had to learn not to use our daughter as the court where our marriage received its final verdict.

That was hard.
Worth doing.
