Chapter 6 - WHAT BRANDON HAD PROMISED THEM

Hailey called me three days later.
Not Brandon.
Not Gertrude.
Hailey.
She sounded exhausted.
“Can we talk?”
“We are.”
“In person.”
“No.”
Silence.
Then she said, “Brandon told us you agreed.”
“To what?”
“The house.”
I closed my eyes.
“He said you agreed to spend almost two million dollars building all of you a house?”
“He didn’t say it like that.”
“How did he say it?”
Hailey took a breath.
“He said you wanted everyone under one roof eventually.”
I actually laughed.
I had spent years saying the opposite.
Gertrude could barely visit for a weekend without reorganizing my pantry.
“When did I supposedly say this?”
“He said you two had talked after your anniversary.”
“We talked about Greece.”
Hailey went quiet.
“What did Brandon promise you?”
“A guest suite.”
“Free?”
Another silence.
“And your mother?”
“The downstairs apartment.”
“Who pays ongoing costs?”
“I don’t know.”
“You absolutely know.”
She started crying.
“Charlotte, I thought you were okay with it.”
“You were spending my money.”
“Brandon said the cards were family money.”
There it was.
Not malicious.
Not innocent.
Convenient.
“What did he say about the deposit?”
“That you’d release it after Christmas dinner.”
I stopped.
“After dinner?”
“Yes.”
“Why after?”
“I don’t know.”
But I did.
Christmas dinner had been planned for the following week.
Gertrude had already been escalating her behavior toward Skylar.
Correcting her.
Controlling meals.
Criticizing clothes.
Talking about how “children need hierarchy.”
Maybe the dinner I walked into was not consciously designed as a test.
But the larger family dynamic was.
Brandon expected me to keep absorbing disrespect to maintain peace.
Then, during some holiday moment when everyone was together, he would present the house as a beautiful family plan already too advanced to refuse gracefully.
Architect hired.
Design begun.
Gertrude excited.
Hailey expecting a room.
Deposits paid.
He would not ask:
Do you want this?
He would ask:
Do you really want to disappoint everyone now?
That had been his strategy throughout our marriage.
