Chapter 5 - The Crest in the Glass

Marcus took two slow, involuntary steps back toward the fireplace, his eyes wide, his lips parting in sheer, unadulterated shock. He stared at the chandelier as if a ghost had materialized within the crystal drops.

"No..." Marcus muttered, his voice barely a breath. "No, that’s... that’s impossible. It was removed. I had them take it out three years ago."

Claire’s eyes darted rapidly between her husband’s terrified face and the blinking optic above. Her mind worked with furious speed, dissecting his words, analyzing his reaction.

He knows what it is, she realized, the truth hitting her like a physical blow. He isn't surprised that there’s a camera. He’s terrified because he thought it was gone.

Claire slowly stood up from the carpet, ignoring the dull ache in her knees and the wet, cold fabric of her beige dress. She kept her right hand lowered at her side, her fingers still firmly wrapped around the sharp porcelain shard concealed within her fist. She walked slowly toward the center of the room, positioning herself directly beneath the chandelier, looking up at the fixture from a fresh angle under the direct glare of the afternoon sun.

Now that the camera had rotated thirty degrees on its motorized gimbal, a section of the mounting housing that had previously been buried deep inside the bronze center scrollwork was fully exposed to the light.

Engraved directly into the polished black brass ring surrounding the optical glass was a tiny, intricate emblem.

It was a heraldic design: two rampant lions flanking a stylized oak tree, surmounted by a chevron and three stars.

The Fairchild family crest.

Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. She knew that crest intimately. It was stamped on the heavy signet ring Marcus wore on his left pinky. It was embossed in gold leaf on the formal stationery Vivian used for her invitations. It was carved into the heavy stone archway above the entrance of Oakridge Manor.

And most importantly, it was printed on the header of the confidential financial and legal documents that Marcus had brought home four years ago during the height of the family’s estate restructuring—documents concerning his late father’s private trusts, corporate transfers, and non-disclosure agreements.

When Claire had asked about those specific files two years ago after finding a mislaid folder in the library, Marcus had flared up in an explosive panic, claiming the documents were ancient history, completely irrelevant, and had been destroyed in an office shredding service years ago.

Yet here was the exact same crest, precision-engraved by a manufacturer onto a military-grade, motorized surveillance camera hidden inside the sunroom chandelier.

Claire turned her head slowly to look at her husband.

The camera was never hers.

The surveillance specialist she had hired three months ago hadn't installed a new camera at all. He had simply tapped into an existing, ultra-sophisticated hardware node that had been embedded inside the manor's infrastructure long before she ever set foot in Oakridge. The system she thought she was using to protect herself was an ancient, invisible web that had been spinning in the dark for years.

Someone inside the Fairchild family hadn't just been recording this afternoon's tea gathering.

Someone had been secretly recording Marcus for years.
