Chapter 8 - THE STORY MATTHEW COULD NOT CONTROL

The legal process lasted far longer than the afternoon in the driveway.

Matthew was arrested and charged in connection with the confinement, assault and attempted staging of my death. Additional financial charges followed after investigators completed the loan review.

Derek initially denied knowing anything about violence.

The messages proved he knew Matthew wanted to stop me from reaching the bank, but not necessarily how far Matthew planned to go. His cooperation agreement and testimony became part of the later case.

There was no single dramatic courtroom moment when every lie collapsed at once.

There were hearings.

Digital-forensic reports.

Medical testimony.

Financial records.

Arguments over intent.

Matthew’s defense said he wanted to frighten me, not kill me.

Prosecutors pointed to the insurance increase, the forged goodbye letter, the removed camera, the exhaust searches and the message saying I would no longer be a problem.

He eventually accepted a negotiated resolution after several charges were upheld for trial. The sentence did not restore the years I lost or make every danger disappear, but it removed his ability to reach me freely and created a record he could not rewrite as a private misunderstanding.

The financial case against Bennett Ridge continued separately.

Some properties were sold.

Contractors recovered only part of what they were owed.

The disputed loan against my house was voided as to my forged personal guarantee, but untangling the lien took nearly a year.

My father’s trust records and the bank’s failure to verify certain documents helped preserve my share of the property.

I chose not to remain there.

A house can survive legally and still feel occupied by fear.

I sold it under court supervision, paid the legitimate portion of remaining obligations tied to my ownership and used what remained to rent a small house with windows facing a public street.

The first thing I changed was the garage.

It had manual interior releases.

Carbon monoxide detectors.

A keypad only I controlled.

For months, I still left the door open whenever I entered.

Healing does not care whether a fear is logical.

It cares whether your body has learned the danger is over.
