Chapter 3 - THE SCARS BENEATH HIS SHIRT

Richard unlocked the bathroom door and allowed me inside.

The room smelled of soap, old tile, and a medicinal cream whose label had been deliberately peeled away. I sat on the closed toilet lid while he pulled his shirt across his lap but did not put it on.

“I thought you had a small burn,” I said.

He gave a tired laugh.

“That’s what Frank wanted everyone to believe.”

My father had been dead for eleven years.

Even so, Richard lowered his voice before saying his name.

“What did Daddy do?”

Richard looked toward the sink.

“The night of the accident, the main cutting line kept shutting itself down. A heat sensor detected pressure building behind the fabrication chamber. Your father had already missed two production targets that month.”

“He told us the machine failed.”

“It did exactly what it was designed to do. It stopped.”

Frank ordered the maintenance crew to bypass the safety interlock until the overnight quota was complete.

Richard refused.

My father threatened to report him for insubordination.

Twenty minutes later, a younger worker named Samuel Price entered the chamber to clear jammed material. The pressure line ruptured while Samuel was still inside.

Richard heard him screaming.

He ran through the emergency door, pulled Samuel away from the chamber, and then returned because my father had fallen near the control platform.

The second release struck Richard across the back.

“Daddy was injured too?”

“Smoke inhalation and a broken wrist.”

“But he said he pulled you out.”

Richard shook his head.

“I carried him to the stairs before I collapsed.”

The official report said Richard entered the restricted area without authorization and accidentally disabled the safety system.

My father signed it.

So did Richard.

“Why would you sign a lie that blamed you?”

May you like

His eyes finally met mine.

“Because your father came to my hospital room before you were allowed to visit.”
