Chapter 1 - HOLD HER STILL

The tattoo machine made a thin, furious buzzing sound that seemed to fill every corner of our suburban Columbus living room.
The air smelled like rubbing alcohol and overheated plastic. A lamp beside the beige couch cast a hard white glare across Ashley’s gloved hands while my husband held both my wrists against the cushions.
“Stop fighting,” Michael said. “You’re making this worse.”
As if I were the one doing it.
I was twenty-eight weeks pregnant, barefoot, and trapped beneath the man who had promised to protect me. My black maternity shirt had been pulled above my stomach. Ashley sat beside the coffee table in a black tank top, her tattooed arms arranged around a kit she had brought into my home without my permission.
For years, strangers had trusted her to stop the moment they said no.
That night, she treated my body like a family joke she had been waiting to finish.
“Hold her still,” she told Michael. “The baby keeps making her twitch.”
Michael tightened his grip.
His cousin Nathan stood in the doorway, forty years old and completely silent. He had arrived believing there would be a family dinner. Instead, he watched Ashley lower the buzzing tool toward my skin while the muted television flashed behind her.
I turned my face into the rough couch fabric and counted the seams.
I counted Michael’s breaths.
I counted the seconds between the buzzing stopping and beginning again.
I did not scream after the first few minutes.
They mistook that for surrender.
Ashley leaned back to inspect the blurred shapes she had forced onto me. She had begun with a crude version of the Rowan family crest, then added a degrading image beneath it.
“There,” she said. “Now everyone will know who the family property belongs to.”
Michael loosened one hand long enough to laugh.
That was his mistake.
I curled my fingers around his wrist and dragged my nails across his skin. He cursed and shoved my hand down, but I felt skin collect beneath my nails.
Ashley saw the crescent marks.
Her expression changed.
When she reached for me, one fingertip of her black glove caught against my ring and tore loose. I closed my fist around the small piece before it fell.
It was not much.
A fragment of glove.
A smear of violet stencil compound.
Michael’s skin beneath my fingernails.
But frightened people can still think.
Ashley reached for my closed hand.
“Open it.”
I stared up at her through tears.
May you like
“Too late.”
For the first time that night, neither of them looked powerful.
