Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO

Russell did not move for several seconds.

Gwendolyn realized what she had done and immediately tried to recover.

“I mean not in front of Phoebe.”

I almost laughed.

She had been perfectly willing to accuse a five-year-old.

Now she cared about protecting her.

Russell looked at her.

“Why not?”

“Because this is already upsetting.”

He lowered the belt slowly onto the side table.

That small act made me breathe for the first time in minutes.

Then he took out his phone.

Gwendolyn stepped forward.

“Russell, wait.”

He ignored her.

The security app opened.

His hands were not steady.

I kept Phoebe behind me.

She pressed her face against my back.

“Mommy?”

“It’s okay.”

The first clip showed the hallway outside the blue room.

Tuesday afternoon.

Phoebe came down the hall carrying her stuffed lamb.

She stopped near the door.

A minute later, Gwendolyn appeared.

Silver shoes.

Rust-orange blouse.

Cream trousers.

Exactly as Phoebe described.

She held an access card.

Russell inhaled sharply.

The camera showed Gwendolyn unlock the office and enter.

She stayed inside twelve minutes.

When she came out, she carried something flat beneath her blouse.

A folder.

Phoebe had hidden behind the stair column.

Gwendolyn never saw her.

Russell replayed it.

Once.

Twice.

Gwendolyn began crying.

Not convincingly anymore.

“I can explain.”

Russell stared at the screen.

“Explain.”

“I was looking for Mother’s letter.”

“What letter?”

“The one about me.”

His expression darkened.

“There was no letter.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I inventoried everything with the attorney.”

She turned toward me suddenly.

“Heather turned you against me.”

I almost admired the instinct.

Even cornered, she reached for the old strategy.

Blame me.

Russell looked at me.

Then at Phoebe.

Then back at his sister.

“No.”

One word.

Quiet.

Late.

But real.

Gwendolyn’s face changed.

She had expected denial.

Or confusion.

Or delay.

Not no.

Then Russell clicked another clip.

Later that same night.

Gwendolyn entered Phoebe’s playroom.

She crouched beside the toy shelf.

Placed something under the coloring books.

The copied estate page.

Phoebe had not lied.

I had not planted evidence.

Gwendolyn had manufactured the accusation before Russell ever yelled.

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Then Phoebe whispered:

“I told the truth.”

Russell’s face broke.

He dropped to one knee several feet away from her, careful not to reach.

“Yes,” he said. “You did.”

Phoebe did not go to him.

May you like

She stayed behind me.

And Russell finally understood that believing her now did not erase the moment he had chosen not to.
