Chapter 13 - RICHARD’S SIGNATURE

The original forged authorization was the final missing financial link.

Investigators obtained the physical document from a Phoenix archive after the independent administrator assumed control. It carried Richard’s name, an old Phoenix emblem and a signature that looked convincing enough to survive casual review.

The forensic comparison found that the signature had been reproduced from a legitimate earlier consent.

It was not written by Richard on the disputed document.

The old review should have detected that.

The reason it did not was documented in an email Margaret sent the external auditors.

Richard has already confirmed his approval. Further signature review is unnecessary and may delay medical transfers.

Richard had not confirmed anything.

He had stopped participating in daily operations.

Margaret filled the gap with authority he once possessed.

The first major reward was legal clarity. The disputed transfer could no longer be defended as Richard’s informed decision.

The second was the financial audit’s completed accounting.

The independent team identified legitimate program costs, duplicated claims, unauthorized reserve investments and management fees paid to Prescott entities. The final total differed from every alarming estimate circulated during the investigation because some money had been returned and some projects genuinely provided care.

That accuracy mattered.

Claire refused to inflate the numbers to make the story sound stronger.

The existing facts were enough.

The chapter’s emotional reversal came from Richard.

He had spent years feeling ashamed that his signature appeared on the document, even while insisting he did not remember signing it. The forged original cleared that particular allegation.

It did not erase his decision to step away when he knew questions remained.

He told Claire as much.

“I let them convince me the program mattered more than the audit.”

“The program did matter.”

“Yes.”

“And the audit mattered because of the program.”

Richard nodded.

That was the distinction he had missed.

The final action came when Phoenix’s board approved restitution through independent administration. Restricted care funds would be restored from Prescott-linked assets and recovered fees where legally available. Active patients would remain supported. The unfinished rehabilitation campus would be evaluated separately, without guaranteed Prescott management contracts.

Margaret was removed as chair.

Graham resigned from the consulting company pending its review.

Laura agreed to cooperate with investigators.

The witness-threat matter moved forward alongside financial proceedings.

No one needed a public list of confidential patients to establish the scheme.

The chapter ended when Richard returned the leather envelope to Claire.

The wax seal was broken now.

She ran one finger along the edge.

“I hated this thing.”

“I know.”

“Why did you keep it?”

Richard took a long time to answer.

“Because I thought someday you might want the truth more than you wanted it hidden.”

Claire looked at him.

“I wanted the truth the whole time.”

He nodded.

“You wanted everyone safe first.”

May you like

She closed the envelope.

“That’s how Margaret kept winning.”
