Chapter 5 - EMMA FINDS OUT

Emma found out because Richard panicked.

Not because Claire told her.

Not because Bethany sent a letter.

Because Richard called Emma and warned her that Claire might “try to sabotage the wedding with medical drama and financial accusations.”

Emma heard medical drama and drove straight to Claire’s apartment.

She arrived wearing workout clothes, no makeup, hair in a messy bun, completely unlike the polished bride everyone had been orbiting for months.

Claire opened the door.

Emma’s face crumpled.

“What medical drama?”

Claire stepped aside.

“Come in.”

The conversation took two hours.

Claire told her about the diagnosis first.

Emma slid to the floor halfway through and sobbed into her hands.

Not bridal tears.

Not self-centered tears.

Sister tears.

The kind Claire had not seen since they were children.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

Claire looked away.

“Dad told me not to.”

Emma lifted her head slowly.

“What?”

“He said your wedding was in six weeks and I shouldn’t start this.”

Emma stared at her as though Claire had spoken another language.

Then came the trust.

Bethany joined by phone.

Nora sat near the kitchen counter, silent but ready.

Emma listened as Bethany explained their mother’s instructions, the withdrawals, and the wedding payments traced to restricted funds.

By the end, Emma looked physically ill.

“I didn’t know.”

Claire believed her.

That surprised her.

After a lifetime of resenting Emma’s protected status, she expected anger to feel easier.

Instead, she saw her sister clearly.

Emma had benefited from Richard’s lies.

But she had not created them.

“What do we do?” Emma whispered.

Claire answered honestly.

“I don’t know.”

Emma wiped her face.

“I’m canceling the wedding.”

Claire sat up.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“Emma, wait.”

“My wedding is being paid for with your cancer money.”

“Our emergency money.”

“Claire.”

Emma’s voice broke.

“Mom left that so you wouldn’t have to sit here terrified about rent and treatment and time off work. Dad used it for roses.”

That was when Claire finally cried again.

Emma crossed the room and held her.

For once, no one asked Claire to be the strong sister.

For once, Emma did not need rescuing.

They were simply two daughters sitting on the floor, grieving a mother who had tried to protect them and a father who had treated protection like a bank account.

Richard arrived forty minutes later.

He had Emma’s location from a family sharing app.

He knocked once, then used his key.

Claire had forgotten he still had one.

He stepped inside and looked at both daughters.

His expression hardened.

“Emma, get in the car.”

Emma stood.

“No.”

Richard blinked.

That one word seemed to confuse him more than any accusation could have.

“No?” he repeated.

Emma moved beside Claire.

“No.”

Richard looked at Claire.

“What did you tell her?”

Claire met his eyes.

“The truth.”

He scoffed.

“You don’t even know what truth is right now. You’re sick, scared, and looking for someone to blame.”

Emma’s voice sharpened.

“She has cancer.”

Richard turned on her.

“And you have a wedding.”

The room went silent.

Even he seemed to hear it.

Too late.

Emma removed her engagement ring slowly and placed it on the coffee table.

“If the wedding requires me to ignore my sister’s cancer and Mom’s stolen trust, then there isn’t going to be one.”

Richard’s face went pale.

For the first time, Claire understood something powerful.

Her father had not protected Emma.

May you like

He had trained her too.

And training could break.
