Chapter 8 - THE ROOM THEY CLEARED BEFORE I WENT UNDER

Mara drove me to the Whittaker house six weeks later.
I was finally strong enough to collect the belongings Dad had not put into garbage bags.
He was not allowed to be there during pickup.
Evelyn had temporarily moved in with her sister.
A police standby was arranged because nobody wanted another scene.
I expected walking into the house to hurt.
It did.
But not because I missed it.
My old room was nearly empty.
The bed was gone.
My books had been boxed.
My mother’s photograph sat facedown on the closet shelf.
And against one wall was a new desk.
Already assembled.
Owen had been right.
They had started converting my room before surgery.
Mara stared at it.
“They weren’t even going to wait?”
“No.”
I picked up Mom’s photograph.
She was thirty-four in it, standing on a beach with me on her hip. I was two.
I suddenly wondered what she would have done if she had lived.
Would Richard still have become this man?
Or had he always been him in smaller ways?
I stopped trying to answer.
There are questions that become traps because no possible answer changes what happened.
I packed three boxes.
Clothes.
Books.
Family photographs.
My grandmother’s necklace.
I left the furniture.
The old childhood trophies.
Most of the things Richard had purchased.
For years, I had believed leaving that house meant losing proof that I belonged to a family.
Now I understood belonging was not stored in objects.
Before leaving, I stood in the doorway one last time.
Mara asked, “You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
“No.”
We both laughed.
Then I closed the door.
Outside, Owen was waiting in Deborah’s car.
He was still thin from months of illness but looked better than he had in years.
He got out slowly.
“You weren’t supposed to lift anything.”
“Neither were you.”
“I didn’t.”
He opened his arms.
I hugged him carefully.

Richard had spent months trying to save his son.
He never imagined doing it would cost him both children.
