Chapter 6 - WHAT MY FATHER HAD HIDDEN

Dad tried to grab the envelope.
Marian pulled it behind her.
Wyatt immediately stepped between them.
“Back up.”
“This is my father’s estate.”
Marian’s expression became hard.
“No, Richard. I administered your father’s estate planning for twenty-six years.”
Dad stopped.
I stared at her.
“You told me Dad’s attorney handled the final probate.”
“He did.”
Marian looked confused.
“I was told you had received your beneficiary notice months ago.”
I turned toward my father.
“What beneficiary notice?”
Dad said nothing.
My mother grabbed Madison’s arm.
Hard.
Marian opened the envelope.
Dad shouted:
“Don’t.”
She ignored him.
Inside was a certified copy of Arthur Bennett’s final testamentary memorandum and instructions connected to the Bennett Family Holding Trust.
The legal text was dense.
Marian did not need to read all of it.
She already knew what mattered.
“Arthur did not leave controlling authority to Richard.”
My father’s face went white.
Marian looked at me.
“He left fifty-one percent of the voting interest in Bennett Family Holdings in trust for Claire.”
Nobody moved.
I laughed once because my mind rejected the sentence.
“What?”
“Your grandfather named you controlling beneficiary.”
Dad stepped forward.
“It was conditional.”
Marian turned.
“No.”
“You don’t know the final version.”
“I witnessed the final version.”
Another silence.
Wyatt looked at Dad.
“So that’s why you were desperate to make her leave.”
My father backed away.
My mother looked at him.
May you like
He looked at her.
For the first time in my life, neither of them had a story ready.
