Chapter 8 - THE ANSWER RICHARD NEVER GOT FROM ME

My parents did not see us that Thanksgiving.

They did not see us at Christmas either.

That part was my decision.

Whatever happened between Daniel and my father's business interests was separate.

I had only one condition for allowing my parents back into Noah's life.

Dad had to apologize.

Not to me.

Not privately to Daniel.

To Noah.

It took him nearly three months.

When he finally came to our house, he stood awkwardly in the living room while Noah watched him from beside Daniel.

Dad crouched.

“I said something mean about your father.”

Noah nodded.

“I shouldn't have.”

Another nod.

“And I was wrong.”

Noah looked at Daniel.

“Daddy isn't poor?”

The room went silent.

Daniel smiled.

Then he gave the answer that reminded me exactly why I had married him.

“Buddy, Grandpa was wrong because money isn't how we decide what somebody's worth.”

Dad lowered his eyes.

For once, he didn't correct anyone.

He didn't defend himself.

He simply accepted it.

Later, as my parents were leaving, Dad stopped beside Daniel.

There were dozens of questions he clearly wanted to ask.

About Mercer.

About the project.

About Daniel's work.

About the connections he had spent years mocking because he had never known they existed.

Daniel offered him nothing.

Dad finally said, “I really did misjudge you.”

Daniel nodded.

“You did.”

That was all.

After they left, I asked the question I had been holding onto for months.

“How much does Dad actually know about you?”

Daniel smiled.

“Enough.”

“And how much do I know?”

His smile disappeared.

He looked toward Noah, then back at me.

“More than anyone.”

I narrowed my eyes.

“That wasn't an answer.”

“No.”

“Daniel.”

He laughed and started walking upstairs.

I followed him.

Because there were still things my husband had not told me.

Things my father had accidentally stumbled close enough to glimpse.

But the secret itself was no longer what mattered most to me.

My family had believed Daniel deserved humiliation because they thought he was poor.

Then they became frightened when they discovered he might be powerful.

Neither reaction impressed him.

And after seven years of marriage, I finally understood why.

May you like

Daniel had never been waiting for my family to discover who he was.

He had been watching to discover who they were.
