Chapter 7 - THE WEDDING RAFAEL WANTED PERFECT

My phone contained thirty-eight missed calls.

Claire.

The wedding coordinator.

My sister.

Rafael.

Finally a message from Claire appeared.

Mom, Dad says Grandpa caused a scene at the prison and you drove off with him. Are you okay?

I stared at it.

Even while panicking, Rafael was still writing the family version first.

I called my daughter.

She answered immediately.

“Mom?”

“I’m safe.”

“What is happening?”

“There are things about your grandfather’s case I just learned.”

There was silence.

“Is he with you?”

“Yes.”

Claire’s voice changed.

“Dad told me he didn’t want to come to the wedding.”

Eusebio heard.

His face tightened but he said nothing.

I closed my eyes.

“He didn’t know you were getting married today.”

Another silence.

Then:

“What?”

Rafael had told our daughter that Eusebio refused invitations because prison had made him bitter.

He told Eusebio nothing about the wedding.

Each side believed the other had rejected them.

It was the same method he used with Iván.

Isolation did not require locked doors.

Sometimes it required only controlling who believed they had been invited through them.

“Do not cancel your ceremony,” I told Claire. “This is still your day.”

“Are you coming?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Eusebio.

“If you still want me there.”

“Of course I do.”

That answer nearly broke him.

We made one decision before leaving Iván’s shop.

No confrontation at the wedding.

No dramatic announcement.

No accusations in front of two hundred guests.

Caroline would secure the evidence and contact the appropriate post-conviction and investigative authorities.

Eusebio would give a recorded attorney-protected statement.

I would attend my daughter’s ceremony.

Then I would speak privately to Rafael.

The plan lasted seventeen minutes.

Because when we arrived at the wedding venue, Rafael was waiting beside the service entrance with two security guards.

He looked at Eusebio.

“You cannot come inside.”

May you like

Claire was standing behind him in her wedding dress.

She had heard everything.
