Chapter 1 - “YOU HAVE THREE”

Richard took my baby out of my arms before I understood what he was doing.
I had been awake for less than an hour after the C-section.
My body felt heavy, my incision burned every time I shifted, and three bassinets stood beside my bed under the soft daylight of the private Chicago hospital room.
Three babies.
Three tiny knitted hats.
Three names I had spent months whispering before they were born.
Oliver.
Emma.
Grace.
I was holding Emma when my father-in-law leaned over the bed.
At first, I thought he was helping me reposition her.
Then he slid both hands beneath her swaddled body and lifted her away.
“Richard?”
He turned toward his younger son, Jason.
“You have three,” he said. “Jason gets one.”
For one second, nobody reacted.
Jason stood beside the bassinets looking horrified.
His wife, Megan, was next to him with both hands clasped in front of her.
Richard calmly placed Emma into Jason’s arms.
Jason supported her properly, but his face went white.
“Dad, what are you doing?”
Richard ignored him.
I tried to sit up.
Pain tore through my abdomen.
“Give her back.”
Richard stepped between the bed and Jason.
“Stop being selfish and give your brother a child.”
I stared at him.
I thought the anesthesia had confused me.
I thought maybe I had misunderstood.
Then I saw Megan’s face.
She knew.
Not everything.
But something.
And that frightened me more than Richard’s words.
My husband, Michael, had stepped out twenty minutes earlier to meet the pediatrician.
Richard had apparently been waiting for that exact window.
“Jason,” I said, “bring Emma here.”
He looked at his father.
That hesitation nearly broke me.
Then I noticed the nurse-call button beside my hand.
I stopped struggling against the bed.
Richard mistook stillness for surrender.
He gave me a satisfied look.
I pressed the button once.
Then looked directly at him.
“Give me my baby back. Now.”
The door opened within seconds.
Nurse Parker entered quickly.
Jason immediately moved toward me.
He placed Emma back beside my arms while Nurse Parker helped settle her safely against the pillow.
Richard stepped backward.
And as he did, a thick folder slipped from inside his coat.
It struck the floor.
Papers scattered across the tile.
Nurse Parker bent to pick them up.
One page stopped her.
Her expression changed.
She looked from the document to Richard.
Then back to me.
“Why were these forms prepared before the babies were born?”
Richard’s confidence disappeared.
I looked at Jason.
Then Megan.
Neither of them seemed surprised enough.

And that was when I realized my father-in-law had not invented this insane idea beside my hospital bed.
Someone had planned it before I ever went into surgery.
