Chapter 8 - THE SHIELD ON THE TABLE
Charles faced county charges for the assault. His attorney called it an isolated family incident and emphasized his age, service record, and lack of recent convictions.
The case moved slowly.
Mark was placed on modified duty while Internal Affairs examined unauthorized searches, false source documentation, retaliation, dishonesty, and misuse of police systems.
His detective promotion was suspended.
He told relatives I had destroyed his career because I could not tolerate his success.
He never said he used my identity.
He never said he searched my therapist.
He never said he prepared a false authorization the night before the party.
The department eventually concluded that Mark fabricated confidential-source records and used them to justify personal searches unrelated to legitimate investigations. Several cases required independent review because the original leads could not be verified.
Mark was dismissed.
His union appealed.
The appeal process continued, but his access was revoked and the promotion was canceled.
A department representative returned his personal belongings in a cardboard box. According to Linda, Mark placed the detective shield on Charles’s dining table and stared at it for almost an hour.
The family had spent decades believing a badge converted power into character.
