Chapter 6 - THE MONEY FROM NOAH
Before the recorder was played, Teresa entered the storage room with a probate attorney.
She had cared for Mom during the final year of her illness. When Margaret realized Vernon was moving money from her accounts and preparing to alter the estate, Teresa helped her contact an attorney privately.
The bank statements showed deposits beginning twenty-seven years earlier.
Noah Bennett’s parents had sent money every month after learning I was pregnant. Noah himself sent part of his military pay.
Vernon received it all.
He told the Bennetts I had left town and refused contact. Later, he claimed I had lost the baby.
Noah died in a training helicopter crash six weeks before Caleb was born.
His parents continued sending support for nearly two years because they believed I was grieving somewhere and might eventually accept help.
Vernon deposited the money into his personal account.
He used part of it to pay off a truck loan and renovate the basement.
Mom discovered the truth only after finding old receipts inside a locked cabinet.
The recorder captured their confrontation months before her death.
Vernon’s voice came through the tiny speaker, older but unmistakable.
“She would have wasted it. Pregnant girls always do.”
Mom asked whether Noah had truly abandoned me.
Vernon laughed.
“The boy wrote every week until he died. I burned the letters.”
My knees nearly gave way.
Caleb stood absolutely still.
On the recording, Mom began crying.
Vernon continued.
“I kept her away because one mistake should not inherit this family. If she came back, she would bring that boy and expect a share.”
The financial theft was old enough to create complicated legal questions.
The rest was not.
The recording also captured Vernon admitting he recently forged Mom’s signature on documents transferring her savings and the house into a trust controlled solely by him.
