Chapter 3 - THE AFFIDAVIT JAKE SIGNED

Jonathan Hale emailed me copies of the county records that night.

I sat in my childhood bedroom until sunrise, comparing dates and signatures on my laptop.

The condemnation process had required every owner to certify the title history. My parents submitted the disputed quitclaim deed and an affidavit stating I had been compensated privately for my share.

The amount listed was $82,500.

I had never received it.

The affidavit carried three signatures.

My father’s.

My mother’s.

Jake’s.

Jake certified that he had personally witnessed my parents pay me in cash after I agreed to surrender my ownership.

He was not an innocent beneficiary.

He had helped build the lie.

The townhome deeds had not yet been transferred into Jake’s name because final title insurance was still pending. My parents had possession agreements and keys, but the county had placed all three properties into a temporary settlement trust until documentation cleared.

That was why Jonathan had called.

Jake had attempted to use the three-bedroom townhome as collateral for a truck refinancing loan before title transferred. The lender ordered an independent title search.

The search uncovered the original deed and the suspicious quitclaim.

Jake’s impatience exposed everything.

At breakfast, I confronted him.

“You swore you saw them pay me eighty-two thousand dollars.”

He shrugged.

“Dad said it was paperwork.”

“You signed a sworn affidavit.”

“I didn’t read it.”

“You were thirty years old.”

My father entered the kitchen.

“Your brother trusted me. That’s what family does.”

“No. He lied for you.”

“It was Grandma’s farm.”

“She recorded part of it in my name.”

“Because she knew you were good with school and paperwork. She wasn’t giving you control over the family land.”

The words were almost funny.

They had spent my entire life praising Jake as the rightful male heir while using my competence whenever documents became difficult.

My grandmother had understood exactly who would protect an asset.

My father understood too.

That was why he removed me.
