Chapter 1 - THE RESULT THAT MADE EVERYONE ASSUME THE WORST

Eric had Daniel by the front of his sweater before I understood what was happening.

One second, Dr. Ortiz was asking us to wait while the ultrasound loaded.

The next, my ex-husband had crossed the pediatric ER room and shoved my husband backward against the open door.

“He lives with her—who else could’ve done this?”

Sophie screamed.

I immediately moved between my daughter and the men.

She was thirteen years old, pale beneath the hospital lights, sitting on the exam bed with her knees drawn up and a white stuffed rabbit crushed against her chest.

Daniel did not hit Eric back.

He grabbed Eric’s wrists, pulled them away from his sweater, and stepped sideways.

“Get your hands off me.”

Nurses rushed toward the doorway.

Eric looked almost unrecognizable.

I had seen him furious during our divorce.

I had seen him scream over money, schedules, missed weekends, and school decisions.

But this was different.

This was terror wearing anger because terror gave him nowhere to stand.

Three hours earlier, Sophie had fainted during volleyball practice.

For almost two months she had complained about nausea, exhaustion, headaches, and intermittent pain low in her abdomen.

Her pediatrician had ordered bloodwork.

The ER repeated it.

Then Dr. Ortiz came into the room and quietly told us one hormone marker associated with pregnancy was elevated.

Eric arrived fifteen minutes later.

Someone had apparently told him enough to panic and not enough to think.

He looked at Daniel.

Daniel lived with Sophie.

Daniel helped with homework.

Daniel drove her to school when I worked early.

And in Eric’s mind, proximity became guilt before anyone had asked another question.

Then Sophie cried out.

“Stop! Daniel never touched me!”

Every adult in the room froze.

Daniel’s face broke.

Not because the accusation surprised him anymore.

Because Sophie had been forced to defend him while frightened and sick.

Dr. Ortiz stepped between everyone and slapped the medical file onto the counter.

“That’s enough.”

Eric’s breathing sounded ragged.

I took Sophie’s hand.

“Sweetheart, nobody is asking you to explain anything right now.”

“But Dad thinks—”

“I know.”

Dr. Ortiz turned toward the ultrasound monitor.

The image appeared.

Gray.

Black.

Shapes I could not understand.

She studied it for several seconds.

Then her expression changed.

“This hormone result is real,” she said.

Eric stared at the screen.

“But this is not a pregnancy.”

No one spoke.

Dr. Ortiz pointed toward a dark irregular area.

Daniel stepped closer but stopped himself before entering Sophie’s space.

Eric’s anger disappeared.

“What is that?”

Dr. Ortiz enlarged the image.

Then she looked directly at me.

“Something inside her is producing the hormone.”

My hand tightened around Sophie’s.

The accusation against Daniel had collapsed in seconds.

But what replaced it terrified me much more.
