Chapter 8 - LAURA HELPED GET THE COLLECTION BACK
Laura became unexpectedly important.
She had every reason to distance herself.
Instead, she cooperated.
Her company suspended the remaining consignment.
The pieces still physically in its possession came back quickly after ownership documentation was reviewed.
The two pending private sales were canceled.
The three completed sales were harder.
One buyer agreed to reverse immediately when he learned the property belonged to a minor beneficiary.
Another required reimbursement of transaction costs.
The third did not want to give up the signed helmet.
He had bought it in good faith.
There were legal arguments available.
Nobody wanted years of litigation over a sports collectible.
Eventually, Adam repaid the buyer at a premium from the proceeds of selling his personal luxury SUV.
The helmet came home.
The game-used ball took longer.
It had been resold once.
Almost nine months passed before it returned.
Not every loss was physical.
Fees.
Premiums.
Professional costs.
Adam absorbed those through the business separation and our eventual marital accounting.
Laura asked to return the little keepsake personally.
Jerry hesitated.
Then agreed.
We met at a coffee shop.
She placed the repaired necklace on the table.
Repaired.
I looked at her.
“The clasp?”
“I had it fixed.”
Jerry picked it up.
“Dad said he was fixing it.”
Laura gave him a sad smile.
“At least somebody should.”
He inspected it.
Then asked:
“Why did you believe him?”
Laura took the question seriously.
“Because adults sometimes sound very confident when they aren’t telling the truth.”
Jerry looked at me.
I could already tell that sentence was going to become household ammunition.
Then Laura added:
“I also should have asked more questions.”
That mattered.
She did not make Adam solely responsible for her professional lapse.
Her company had accepted documentation that appeared sufficient initially but had not independently verified the estate chain as carefully as it should have for certain high-value pieces.
They changed procedures afterward.
Jerry put the keepsake around his neck.
