Chapter 1 - What Lauren Found Under Her Hair

My daughter had been in the salon chair for less than five minutes when the hairstylist stopped breathing normally.
Lauren stood behind Ava with a comb in one hand and scissors in the other.
Ava wore a pink cape and had spent the entire drive complaining that Saturday morning haircuts were “a crime against sleeping.”
Normal.
Eight years old.
Dramatic about everything that deserved absolutely no drama.
Then Lauren lifted the hair above Ava’s neck.
And froze.
Ava reacted instantly.
She reached backward, grabbed Lauren’s wrist and pulled her hand down.
“Please don’t show Mom.”
My stomach dropped.
“Ava?”
She would not look at me.
Lauren lowered the scissors.
“Rachel…”
I walked closer.
Ava grabbed the cape.
“Mom, no.”
I gently removed her hand from Lauren’s wrist.
“I’m not mad.”
That was when I saw fear in her face.
Not embarrassment.
Fear.
I lifted the same section of hair.
Beneath the longer strands was a jagged shaved patch roughly the width of two fingers.
The skin underneath showed fading discoloration.
One small healing scratch ran near the edge.
My body went cold.
“Who did this?”
Ava grabbed my sleeve.
“Can we go home?”
“Sweetheart, who did this?”
My phone rang.
Daniel.
My husband.
Ava’s stepfather.
I answered on speaker without stepping away from her.
“Daniel?”
He did not say hello.
“Ava lies when Ava wants attention.”
Ava recoiled behind my arm.
Lauren noticed.
So did I.
I had not told Daniel what Lauren found.
I had not texted him.
I had not even known something was wrong thirty seconds earlier.
“How do you know what I’m asking about?”
Silence.
Then the salon door jingled.
Daniel walked inside.
Smiling.
He had been outside.
Or close enough to arrive almost immediately.
Ava slid out of the chair.
“Mom.”
She hurried behind me.
I turned my whole body toward Daniel.
His smile disappeared.
“Rachel.”
“Stay there.”
“What is going on?”
Lauren looked at me.
Then Daniel.
Then at Ava clinging to my waist.
Daniel stepped forward.
Lauren moved sideways into his path.
Calmly.
No performance.
“No closer right now.”
Daniel stared at her.
“I’m her stepfather.”
Lauren said:
“And she clearly doesn’t want you closer.”
His jaw tightened.
“Ava, come on.”
She held me harder.
I asked:
“What happened to her hair?”
“Ask her.”
“I’m asking you.”
“She has been acting out.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
Lauren lifted Ava’s hair again.
Only enough to expose the shaved patch.
Daniel looked at it.
Then blurted:
“I told Ava to keep that covered.”
The entire salon seemed to stop.
Daniel realized what he had said.
I turned slowly.
“You told her?”
His face changed.
“Rachel, I can explain.”
“You knew.”
“Ava—”
“Don’t say her name.”
That startled him.
I had never spoken to him like that.
Not once in four years.
I looked at Lauren.
“Can you call the police?”
Daniel stared.
“Are you serious?”
“Yes.”
“Over a haircut?”
Ava started crying.
That sentence told me enough.
I crouched in front of her.
“You are not in trouble.”
She whispered:
“I lied.”
“About what?”
“Thursday.”
Daniel stepped forward.
Lauren blocked him again.
He said:
“This is exactly what she does. She gives you half the story and then everybody acts like I’m some monster.”
I looked at him.
“Did you shave her hair?”
He said nothing.
“Daniel.”
His voice became controlled.
“I gave her a consequence.”
My knees felt weak.
“For what?”
“That is between Ava and me.”
“No.”
Something inside me became very clear.
“She is eight years old. Nothing you do to her body is between you and her.”
Ava started sobbing.
Then said the sentence that would follow me for years.
“I thought you’d say he was just being strict.”
I looked at my daughter.
May you like
And suddenly the most frightening person in the salon was not Daniel.
It was the version of me she had expected.
