Chapter 4 - The Bottle In The Purse

Vanessa came back sooner than expected.
Not because she felt guilty.
Because she had realized Caleb saw the medication bottle.
The hallway camera later showed her stepping into the elevator alcove, stopping, opening her purse, and looking back toward Arthur’s room. She had spent enough time around wealthy men, lawyers, and hospital administrators to understand that small witnesses could become expensive problems.
When she returned, Marcus was closing the briefcase.
Arthur lay weak in the bed, but there was a faint smile at the corner of his mouth.
Vanessa froze in the doorway.
Her eyes moved first to Marcus.
Then the briefcase.
Then Caleb.
Then Arthur.
“What is this?” she asked.
Marcus turned with professional calm.
“Mrs. Whitmore.”
She looked at the coat. “Are you a doctor?”
“No.”
Caleb watched the color shift beneath her makeup.
Vanessa smiled anyway.
Glamour was muscle memory for her.
“Arthur gets confused at night,” she said. “Whatever he told you, he’s heavily medicated.”
Arthur lifted one hand slightly.
“Not heavily enough.”
Her smile vanished.
Marcus opened the briefcase again and turned over one document. A new beneficiary designation lay on top, not fully readable from the door, but clear enough in structure to reveal something had changed.
Vanessa stepped forward.
Arthur’s eyes flicked toward Caleb.
Caleb moved closer to the bed.
Marcus said, “Before you approach, I should tell you that hospital security has been notified.”
Vanessa stopped.
“Security?”
“And your removal of Mr. Whitmore’s medication has been reported.”
She laughed once.
“That is absurd. I manage his care.”
Marcus placed a small evidence pouch on the bedside table.
“Then you can explain why an orderly witnessed you taking a prescribed medication bottle from the room without logging it through nursing staff.”
Vanessa looked at Caleb with hatred so clean it almost looked calm.
“You don’t understand what you saw.”
Caleb swallowed.
“I saw you put his medication in your purse.”
“You saw a wife taking care of her husband.”
Arthur whispered, “I saw a wife waiting for a body.”
That sentence emptied the air.
For one moment, Vanessa’s face revealed the person underneath the dress, diamonds, and practiced softness.
Then she lunged toward the document.
Caleb caught the edge of the rolling table before it tipped. Marcus snapped the briefcase shut. Arthur’s monitor alarmed once as he strained forward.
A nurse rushed in.
Behind her came security.
Vanessa straightened instantly.
“She’s unstable,” Vanessa said, pointing at no one and everyone. “This whole room is unstable.”
Marcus looked at the nurse.
“Please retrieve the medication from her purse under hospital supervision.”
Vanessa clutched the purse against her side.

And that was when everyone in the room understood.
If it was innocent, she would have opened it.
