Chapter 6 - THE PHONE SHE PROTECTED
Valeria’s phone had not been pressed to her chest by accident when she fainted.
She had been recording Hector for months.
Not because she planned to build a criminal case. At first, she recorded him to prove to herself that the conversations happened the way she remembered. Hector had a gift for denying words before their echoes left the room. He would scream, then say he had spoken normally. He would block a doorway, then accuse us of being dramatic. He would take money, then insist we had agreed.
Valeria created a hidden audio folder disguised as a study app.
Inside were recordings of Hector threatening to close my bank account, telling Valeria that my family would abandon us if we left, and admitting that he had used my identity to open a line of credit. There was also a recording from the night she became ill.
Her voice sounded small.
“My stomach really hurts.”
Hector answered, “Then maybe you’ll remember not to touch things that don’t belong to you.”
A muffled impact followed.
Then Valeria cried out.
His voice came again, closer this time.
“You tell your mother I touched you, and I’ll make sure she loses the house before anyone believes her.”
The recording did not contain every answer, but it destroyed the version of our family Hector had spent years presenting to outsiders. He was not a strict father dealing with emotional women. He was a man using fear, money, and calm language to make violence look like discipline.
The financial records revealed another betrayal. Hector had drained nearly all of Valeria’s college savings and borrowed against my car to cover losses from online sports betting. He had intercepted bank notices and changed the mailing preferences so everything came electronically to an account only he controlled.
His obsession with avoiding the hospital was not only about the injuries.
