Chapter 12 - MICHAEL HAD HELPED TRENT TOO

Michael’s memorandum made him look almost prophetic.
Then Samantha Pierce found the old guarantee file.
The picture changed.
Michael had not always distrusted Trent.
For two years, he supported him.
The $150,000 guarantee helped Northline buy equipment and hire seven workers.
Michael attended the warehouse opening.
Sent three Carter family renovation jobs to Trent’s company.
Introduced him to a commercial banker.
Rachel had never known the full extent.
Neither had Eleanor.
Why keep it from her?
Michael knew Eleanor disliked mixing family and business.
So he simply did it.
Another family member deciding disclosure could wait.
Then the guarantee ended.
Not because Trent stole.
Because Northline missed reporting deadlines and carried too much customer-deposit exposure.
Michael demanded tighter controls.
Trent refused.
They fought.
Michael withdrew.
Northline refinanced at higher cost.
Trent later blamed that cost for a difficult year.
Not entirely unfair.
Then Michael’s diligence file contained a note:
T is capable. Pressure makes him reckless. Do not give him family leverage.
Not:
He is evil.
Not:
He will hit my wife someday.
A business judgment.
Then Eleanor discovered her own role.
An email from Michael:
Tell Rachel about the new trust structure after the wedding issue settles.
Eleanor:
Not while she is defending everything Trent does.
Michael:
That is exactly when she needs the real document.
Eleanor had answered:
I know my daughter.
Miriam looked at her.
Eleanor closed the laptop.
She had been wrong about the method.
Maybe right about Trent.
Both could coexist without turning her secrecy into wisdom.
Then the composite consent metadata was examined more closely.
It used Robert Carter’s old account name.
But its document template came from Northline software.
So whoever created it likely had access to:
Old Carter family files.
And Trent’s company environment.
That narrowed things.
Rachel had both indirectly.
She downloaded family records and gave them to Trent.
Trent had Northline.
Could he have created the file sixteen months ago?
Yes.
But he claimed Rachel did not give him the archive until six months ago.
Rachel agreed.
Then investigators found an older route.
Three years earlier, during Michael’s estate cleanup, Trent had helped Rachel transfer files off a failing family laptop.
Eleanor remembered.
Rachel had called:
“Trent knows computers better than I do.”
He copied photographs and tax documents to a new drive.
Could he have captured Robert’s archive then?
Possible.
Trent denied it.
Forensics on the old drive were incomplete.
Then Rachel remembered something.
“He asked why Dad had so many versions of the house plan.”
“When?”
“During that transfer.”
Eleanor stared.
Three years earlier.
Trent had seen the draft residence documents much earlier than Rachel understood.
That did not prove the composite was his.
It made the timeline fit.
Then Samantha produced a Northline password-manager export.
One entry:
CARTER ARCHIVE API
Created twenty months earlier.
Username:
R.CARTER
Password hidden in encrypted vault.
Owner:
Trent.
The old family archive token.
He had kept access.
For years.
Rachel went pale.
“I never gave him that.”
Maybe she had without knowing.
Maybe he copied it during migration.
Either way, he had secret access to family estate files long before the current loan.

The central property scheme was no longer a desperate idea born this summer.
Trent had been quietly holding the tools for it.
