Chapter 4 - THE FUNERAL WITH NO BODY

I did not drive to Rosebridge.

Not yet.

Dad had said one useful thing.

If the facility learned Mom had reached Sophie, they might move her.

So I spent the next morning proving the funeral was fraudulent.

St. Matthew Funeral Home had changed owners twice in twelve years, but the old records were still stored digitally.

The current director, Martin Hale, was reluctant until I showed him Mom’s death certificate and explained what I had found.

He searched the archive.

Then frowned.

“This is unusual.”

“What?”

“There should be a transfer record.”

“For the body?”

“Yes. Hospital or medical examiner to funeral home.”

He searched again.

Nothing.

“No body transfer.”

“Could records be missing?”

“Possible.”

Then he opened another file.

“No embalming authorization either.”

“Closed casket.”

“Still normally documented.”

He clicked again.

The funeral contract appeared.

Service arranged by Howard Reed.

A second name appeared under special instructions.

Calvin Price.

I knew Calvin.

Everyone in my family did.

He had been Reed Senior Services’ attorney since before I finished high school.

He handled Mom's estate.

He drafted my father’s will.

He had sat three rows behind us at the funeral.

“What did Calvin have to do with my mother’s burial?”

Martin shook his head.

“No idea.”

Then he found a scanned handwritten note from the original funeral director.

Private sealed casket supplied at family request.

No remains received.

Weight inserted per counsel instruction.

Do not open.

My mouth went dry.

“Weight?”

Martin looked uncomfortable.

“Sandbags, most likely.”

I stared at him.

“They buried sandbags.”

“According to this note.”

I photographed everything.

Then I asked about the death certificate.

Mom’s certificate listed Dr. Alan Pierce as certifying physician.

No coroner.

No autopsy.

No hospital name.

Cause:

Delayed complications of motor vehicle trauma.

I remembered the prescription bottle.

Dr. Alan Pierce.

The same physician who had prescribed medication for my supposedly dead mother eleven days ago.

One man had certified her death twelve years earlier.

The same man was treating her today.

That transformed suspicion into intention.

I went next to the county vital records office.

The clerk confirmed the certificate had been filed electronically by Pierce’s medical practice.

Supporting hospital documents had been waived because cremation was initially planned.

“But she wasn’t cremated.”

The clerk frowned.

“Then there should have been an amended disposition record.”

There wasn’t.

“Who approved the filing?”

She checked.

“Attorney submission.”

“Name?”

“Calvin Price.”

By early afternoon, the pattern was visible.

Howard lied to me.

Dr. Pierce certified a death that did not happen.

Calvin made the false paperwork legal enough to pass.

The funeral home buried an empty coffin.

None of it was accidental.

I called Dad from my car.

“Did Calvin arrange Mom’s funeral?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

“Did Dr. Pierce sign a false death certificate?”

“Daniel—”

“Yes or no.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dad exhaled.

“You need to understand what was happening then.”

“Then explain.”

“I can’t over the phone.”

“Why?”

“Because Calvin still monitors certain things.”

That sounded insane.

Twelve hours earlier, I might have dismissed it as paranoia.

Now I had an empty coffin and a false death certificate.

“Monitors what?”

“Company accounts. Legal notices. Some communications.”

“Does he control Rosebridge?”

Dad did not answer.

I understood anyway.

I hung up.

Before going home, I drove past Rosebridge.

The property sat behind iron fencing on thirty wooded acres outside town.

The sign read:

ROSEBRIDGE RESIDENTIAL WELLNESS

Private Neurobehavioral Care

A gray sedan exited through the gate.

Blue RBR decal.

Same kind as the car that collected my mother outside Sophie's school.

I watched it disappear.

Then another vehicle approached the entrance.

A black Mercedes.

Calvin Price was driving.

He paused at the gate.

The security arm lifted immediately.

He did not sign in.

He did not speak to anyone.

He simply drove inside like a man entering property he controlled.

That evening, I looked up Rosebridge’s ownership records.

The facility belonged to an LLC.

Marlowe Health Holdings.

Marlowe’s registered legal agent:

Calvin Price.

My mother wasn’t just living in a private facility connected to the man who arranged her fake funeral.

She was living in one he legally controlled.
