Chapter 6 - VANESSA CAME FOR THE HOUSE, NOT FOR ME

Vanessa did not apologize.
She sent a letter through Daniel.
Four pages.
Most of it explained why I had hurt her.
I read half.
Stopped.
Then put it away.
Three weeks later she came to my house without warning.
She stood on the porch.
“I need to talk to you.”
“No.”
“Margaret, this affects my life too.”
That sentence was so revealing I opened the storm door.
“Exactly how does my house affect your life?”
She folded her arms.
“Daniel built plans around what you promised.”
“I promised nothing to you.”
“You told him he’d inherit.”
“After I die.”
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
“I genuinely don’t.”
Her composure cracked.
“We’ve already spent money.”
“On plans I never authorized.”
“The architect deposit is nonrefundable.”
“Then that was an expensive lesson.”
“You’re enjoying this.”
“No.”
I wasn’t.
I wanted my son back.
The one who used to call me on Sundays.
Who fixed Walter’s old lawn mower because he knew I refused to replace it.
Who cried beside me at his father’s funeral.
I did not enjoy discovering that he had begun seeing my home as a delayed payment.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Do you have any idea what it’s like to know you could solve all of this and just refuse?”
I stared at her.
“What exactly am I supposed to solve?”
“Our housing.”
“Why?”
“Because you have four bedrooms.”
There it was again.
Possession as obligation.
“You have space. Therefore we should get it.”
“You have money. Therefore we should use it.”
“You have a house. Therefore we should plan around it.”
I asked:
“If I owned two houses, would you deserve both?”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Why? Where does your rule stop?”
She had no answer.
Then she said:
“Daniel told me Walter wanted the house kept in the family.”
My chest tightened.
Walter had said that.
Once.
During Christmas dinner ten years earlier.
He loved the idea that Daniel might someday raise his own children there.
But Walter also said something else in his estate notes:
Margaret’s comfort comes first. Everything after her is secondary.
I had kept that page.
Vanessa had never seen it.
“Walter wanted me safe.”
“You are safe.”
“Yes.”
I looked directly at her.
May you like
“And I intend to stay that way.”
I closed the door.
