Chapter 12 - MELISSA LEAVES
Melissa did not get thrown onto the street.
Real marriages are not solved by one dramatic command in a living room.
Jason asked for space.
Melissa went to stay with her sister for two weeks.
They began counseling.
The first sessions went badly.
Melissa focused on Margaret.
Her interference.
Her land.
Her judgment.
Eventually the therapist asked:
“If Margaret vanished from this situation entirely, what problems in your marriage would remain?”
The answer was almost all of them.
Debt.
Secrecy.
Unequal household work.
Jason’s long absences.
Melissa’s resentment.
His habit of solving conflict by working more hours.
Her habit of interpreting help as obligation.
The hidden office lease.
The realtor email.
The use of Thomas as leverage.
Margaret was not the marriage problem.
She had simply been absorbing enough labor that the problem stayed easier to ignore.
Jason and Melissa separated for several months.
Then slowly attempted reconciliation.
Margaret stayed out of it.
That was harder than expected.
Mothers who spend decades fixing things develop withdrawal symptoms when they stop.
She learned to answer Jason’s complaints with:
“What are you going to do about it?”
Instead of:
“I’ll come over.”
