Chapter 12 - THE THREAT AGAINST MY FATHER

Grant’s financial records revealed that the false procurement endorsement was not the only attempt to create leverage involving Dad. Holloway Defense Logistics maintained a private communications file describing informal dinners, family gatherings, and conversations where my father was present.
Several entries exaggerated his involvement.
One described him as an adviser.
Another called him a supporter of the company’s contract renewal.
He had never accepted either role.
The records did not prove he compromised military decisions. They showed the family business created a misleading account of his relationship to the company.
Evelyn intended to use that ambiguity.
Her message to Grant was recovered during the financial investigation.
If Claire contacts Daniel, remind her that asking questions could create a review of his involvement. She won’t want that near retirement.
She was right about one thing.
I had been frightened of harming my father.
That fear helped keep me silent.
The apparent defeat came when Dad informed me that an official inquiry would examine the extent of his contacts with Holloway Defense Logistics. He welcomed the investigation, but I saw the strain on him.
He had served for decades.
Now someone was questioning whether a family relationship affected his professional judgment.
“I’m sorry,” I told him.
He shook his head.
“You didn’t create the emails.”
“I helped Grant access the old account.”
“You’ve told investigators that.”
“I should have known.”
My father looked at me.
“Claire, don’t take responsibility for the decisions people made after deceiving you.”
I wanted to believe him.
Then he said something more important.
“Even if this creates consequences for me, that does not change what happened to you.”
For months Grant made every choice feel like a threat to someone I loved.
Dad refused to let his own reputation become another reason I stayed quiet.
The overlooked clue came from the trust administrator. Evelyn had included the fabricated endorsement and procurement renewal forecasts in materials supporting a proposed change to the family’s asset-management structure.
The documents were intended to make Holloway Defense Logistics appear financially stable enough to justify greater family control over future trust-related decisions.
The false military endorsement had not been prepared solely for contract officials.
It was part of the case Evelyn hoped to present to the independent trustee.
Everything converged.
The baby’s future inheritance.
The family company.
Dad’s perceived support.
My manufactured instability.
Evelyn wanted control of the story because the story would influence financial and legal decisions.
Then the trustee issued a formal response.
No change in management authority would be considered while the identity and financial investigations remained active.
Evelyn had failed to secure the advantage she built the entire plan around.
The same afternoon, my obstetrician recommended that I remain in the hospital because delivery might be approaching earlier than expected.

My first thought was not fear of labor.
It was whether Grant would find a way into the maternity unit.
