Chapter 1 - The Name Daniel Remembered

Grace Bennett knew something was wrong before she reached the living room.

The front door was open.

Not unlocked.

Open.

Cold evening air moved through the entryway, carrying the faint pulse of red and blue police lights from the street into the house.

Then she heard Noah trying to breathe.

Grace dropped her purse.

Her nine-year-old son was on the cream carpet beside the gray sofa, one arm wrapped across his ribs, his face pale except for a dark bruise along his jaw. His striped navy polo was twisted at the collar. His eyes were open, but unfocused.

“Noah! Baby, look at me!”

Grace fell to her knees beside him.

Noah turned toward her voice.

“Mom…”

His breath hitched.

Grace slid one hand behind his shoulders without moving him more than necessary.

“I’m here. Don’t try to get up.”

Then she looked across the room.

Her brother Evan stood near the staircase.

Thirty-eight years old.

Dark hair.

Gray sweater.

Completely composed.

Their mother, Carol, stood behind him with one hand pressed protectively against his arm.

Grace’s fear turned into rage.

“What happened?”

Evan shrugged.

“I disciplined him.”

Grace stared.

The sentence was so casual that for a moment she thought she had misunderstood.

“You did what?”

“He was disrespectful.”

Noah’s breathing became faster.

Grace turned back immediately.

“Look at me, sweetheart. Just look at me.”

Sirens stopped outside.

Footsteps rushed through the open doorway.

Two paramedics entered first, followed by two police officers. A female paramedic dropped beside Noah with an oxygen mask while her partner, Daniel Price, opened a medical bag.

Grace moved only when instructed.

“His breathing’s shallow,” Daniel said. “Noah, can you tell me where it hurts?”

Noah touched his side.

Every movement made Grace feel sick.

The female paramedic fitted oxygen over his face.

Daniel glanced across the room.

Then froze.

Not dramatically.

Professionally.

The kind of stillness that meant something inside him had recognized danger before his mouth had caught up.

He was staring at Evan.

Evan noticed.

His confidence slipped.

Daniel slowly stood.

“Ma’am…”

Grace looked up.

“Is that your brother?”

“Yes. Why?”

Daniel kept looking at Evan.

“What’s his name?”

Grace hesitated.

“Evan Bennett.”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“That’s not the name he gave us last time.”

Grace felt the room tilt.

Carol went pale.

Evan’s shoulders tightened.

“Daniel—”

Daniel looked directly at him.

“You remember me?”

Evan said nothing.

Grace slowly rose from beside Noah.

“What last time?”

No one answered.

May you like

Not yet.

And suddenly the bruise on her son’s face was no longer the only thing Grace was afraid of.
