Chapter 4 - The Video

Claire woke in the hospital with a sore chest, an oxygen cannula beneath her nose, and Nathan asleep in a vinyl chair beside her bed.
For a moment, she thought she had dreamed the conference room.
Then she saw Jenna standing near the window, eyes red, phone clutched in both hands.
“What happened?” Claire asked.
Nathan woke so fast he nearly knocked the chair back.
“You scared the hell out of us.”
Jenna started crying.
Claire tried to sit up. Pain moved across her chest. Nathan gently pressed the blanket near her arm.
“Don’t,” he said. “Doctor said rest.”
The medical explanation came in careful pieces. A sudden cardiac rhythm issue complicated by stress and an underlying condition Claire had not known she had. Serious, treatable, terrifying. Seconds had mattered. Nathan starting help had mattered. The paramedics arriving quickly had mattered.
The AED being untouched mattered too.
Claire looked from Nathan to Jenna.
“Martin?”
Neither answered immediately.
That told her more than words.
Jenna stepped closer and held out the phone.
“I recorded it,” she said. “I didn’t mean to at first. I just—when he stopped Nathan, I thought someone needed proof.”
Claire watched the video once.
Only once.
Herself collapsing.
Coworkers recoiling.
Martin pointing down.
Leave her there. She’s doing this for attention.
Nathan trying to help.
Martin’s hand on his shoulder.
Claire lying still.
Nathan breaking free.
Jenna calling 911.
Daniel arriving.
Daniel recognizing Martin.
The AED cabinet untouched in the background.
Martin moving toward Jenna’s phone.
Daniel blocking him.
Claire felt no anger at first.
That came later.
What she felt first was a strange, hollow grief.
Because until that moment, part of her had still believed Martin was only professionally cruel. Ambitious. Manipulative. Vindictive. Dangerous to careers.
Not dangerous to bodies.
Not willing to watch a woman stop breathing because her emergency inconvenienced his narrative.
Hospital risk management contacted her that evening. HR called after that. Then legal. Their voices were careful, full of concern shaped by liability.
Claire let them talk.
Then she asked one question.
“Has Martin been suspended?”
Silence.
A pause just long enough to insult her.
“We’re reviewing all available information.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Jenna said quietly, “I already sent the video to Nathan and Daniel.”
Claire opened her eyes again.
“Send it to my attorney too.”
Nathan leaned forward.
“You have one?”
May you like
Claire looked at the audit folder on the bedside table. Jenna had brought it from the office.
“I was about to need one.”
