Chapter 11 - DAVID'S FOLDER

David's folder contained forty-seven files.
Most were ordinary.
School schedules.
Health insurance.
Emergency contacts.
A copy of Lily's birth certificate.
Then:
IF I DON'T MAKE IT
David had prepared it before heart surgery.
He knew the operation carried risk.
The first document listed practical instructions.
School pickup.
Pediatrician.
Medication allergies.
Sarah's mother.
Vanessa.
Then one paragraph:
If Sarah is stable, Lily stays with Sarah. She is her mother. Do not use my death to change that.
Vanessa stared when Rebecca read it aloud.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Then:
If Sarah is drinking or disappears again, Vanessa can take Lily temporarily until Sarah is evaluated. Temporary means temporary.
Rebecca looked at Vanessa.
That word mattered.
David had trusted his sister.
With limits.
Then a third sentence:
Vanessa thinks Sarah needs consequences. Sarah thinks Vanessa wants control. They are both usually right about half.
Even dead, David refused to make things clean.
Then the old custody chronology.
Sarah leaving overnight.
Missed calls.
Two arguments in front of Lily.
One incident where Sarah took Lily to Helen's for three days after fighting with David and did not tell him until morning.
Real.
Bad.
Not abduction.
Not abandonment.
Then David's own flaw.
He wrote:
I changed the bank password after she left. That made everything worse. Don't do that again.
He had used finances to pressure Sarah home.
He knew it.
He regretted it.
Vanessa had never included that document in her court filings.
Why?
“I didn't think it was relevant.”
Rebecca looked at her.
“Of course you didn't.”
Then they found the original source language for Vanessa's fake statement.
Not:
Your mother dumped you.
David had written:
When Sarah leaves during conflict, Lily experiences it as being dumped even when Sarah intends to return.
Vanessa had compressed that into:
Your mother dumped you.
That was her wording.
Her certainty.
Not David's.
Then another file.
Audio note.
David speaking.
Weak.
Probably recorded after a hospital consultation.
“If I don't make it, don't make Lily responsible for deciding which adult gets to feel betrayed.”
Silence.
Sarah cried.
Vanessa did not.
Then David said:
“Sarah needs help when she's drinking. Vanessa needs someone who tells her no before she decides no is an obstacle.”
Vanessa's face changed.
She had heard that sentence before.
Rebecca noticed.
“You've listened to this.”
Vanessa nodded.
“When?”
“After he died.”
“And you still forged evidence.”
“Yes.”
No explanation left.
Then the final file in that folder would not open.
Encrypted.
Name:
BLUE
Vanessa stared at it.
Sarah looked at her.
Rebecca asked:
“Do either of you know what that is?”
Both women said no.
Too quickly.
Rebecca did not push.
Not yet.
The important current truth was already enough.
May you like
But David had left one sealed piece of the family history behind.
And somebody in the room did not seem surprised it existed.
